Towing Equipment Questions/Opinions

Question For Commerical Haulers In Elkhart Ind Area

I want one for MPG increase while towing approx. 10,000 lbs. I really cann't decide on which one. Don't care about power increases as each will do that and with my stock truck don't want more power. I do want MPG increase.

I like the idea of the edge juice/atittude with the gauges and built in safety features.

I also like the smarty with code reader, feature enable, and totally indectable. Not that anyone should try and hide problems they caused themselves.

I can get either one for only a few dollars difference.

I have had modified vehicles/trucks in the past and know all the assest/liability fun/problems so please don't lecture me on what I should have as support components.

Which level to run on would be o. k.
Any problems with either units?

For MPG increase which one would you use?
Thanks,
Ron

I would do gauges and a Smarty. I had not cared for downloaders in the past but the Smarty from what I have read is doing pretty well.

The 1/2 power setting would be handy for smog inspections if you have em in your area, if not they may be coming.

I thought of the guage thing with smarty but why should I spend $300. 00 plus for a set of guages when I can get them with the Edge Juice/Attitude. I can get the Edge juice/attitude monitor for the same price as a smarty alone.

You could also get an edge in the classified section for $500 (or on ebay)... . it sounds as if $ is the main criteria and you've answered your own question... .

You pretty much nailed it. I can get a brand new Edge Juice/Attitude for a few bucks over $650 from a reputable dealer.

Now the big but I'am not spending any money if I can not get better fuel mileage. My truck has plenty of power for what I do.

It seems like you may not need gauges if your main concern is MPG but I'm no expert on what could happen with the smarty in a < or = to stock mode.

I got at least a . 5 to 1 mpg increase with the Smarty.

OK so maybe in your case, assume that you would get . 5 to 1 mpg increase with the Smarty or the Juice. That puts the break even point for your purchase at 30,000 to 75,000 miles depending upon the price of diesel, the increase in mpg you get, the price you paid for the box / downloader and the consistantcy of your driving style.

The Juice has a EGT indication. Considering both, the Juice might be a better value in the long run because if you smoke a piston and / or score a cylinder running excessive EGT's your break even point for mileage number gets chucked out the window.

Also considering the both, the Juice has a much higher potential to smoke a piston if the pump wire is tapped due to a significant different in up power capability. Where with the Smarty the risk, with stock injectors, is greatly reduced. The Juice untapped would be comparable to the Smarty in most respects to up power capability. But in the area where the Smarty shines, which is low rpm drivabiliy, are dimished with the Juice.

If you only want a fuel mileage increase, you could go with a used Edge EZ or some such for about half the price. Your break even mileage could drop by many thousands of miles. Be move conservative and throw in a EGT gauge and your break even mileage goes back up.

FWIW most boxes that add timing will also "generically" include a mileage increase. But in this case and as always, there are no guarantees written or implied so your actual mileage may vary.

Good Luck;

Jim

noseeum,

Thanks for the figures and comparison. I don't really know if you mean the tap the pump wire which on a 06 you do not. On the vp44 trucks you had too.

One point you mentioned is why I'am leaning more toward the Edge Juice/Attitude. The Smarty has increased low end power and the edge does not. With my stock truck I would be in jeopardy of damaging the transmission with increased power down low before the transmission has time to step up line pressure.

Agreed in principal... . however, Marco did something with the shifting algorithms, becasue the smarty makes the transmission shift better than stock... don't know if line pressures are increased to avoid what you desribed, but it's much better... . and power down low makes towing easier... .

Go buy the J/A... . i can't see how you havent already... . go for it! I don't think you'll be disappointed either way!

I'am negotiating a deal with a supplier. They offer free shipping, $20. 00 back on the order and a remote auto starter that's worth 89. 95.

The Edge Juice/Attitude they are selling for about $675. minus the $20. 00 = about $655 and I'am trying to get them to keep the auto starter and discount the price from the Juice/attitude for a price somewhere around $566. ;) If I can get the deal to swing I'll be all :D :D
