Question for Marco or Bob...

how does the smarty maintain things like hourmeter or not leave footprints? I know that you hav said this is the complicated part about getting it ready for the 3rd gens and hopefully my '06

99 Man is OK.

Gang,

With the help of DarrellB ( thanks Darrell! ) I've solved the problem with the

" Unknown software " for the 99 Man trucks. An update for Smarty is due...

Since we're already working on other upgrades which are not ready yet, I would prefer to not release the " Unknown software " fix to the general public for now.

I would rather prefer to send the fix via E-Mail to those of you affected by it.

I'm also in contact with Bob Wagner, I'm sending the update also to him so that he can distribute it too.

Now, let me give you a few instructions how to do an update to Smarty.

This is the download page with everything needed:

http://www.madselectronics.com/download.html

You need to install the driver for Smarty on your PC.

Instructions for driver installation should you need them :

http://www.madselectronics.com/downloadfiles/USBDriverinstallation.pdf

The driver:

http://www.madselectronics.com/downloadfiles/FT232_D2XX_Driver.zip

Then you need to install the software that does update Smarty through the PC. ( Smarty USB for win XP, Smarty USBL for the other win versions )

Here:

http://www.madselectronics.com/downloadfiles/SmartyUSB.exe

Done? Now you need the actual update for Smarty. This one you get sending a request via E-Mail to either Bob or Me.

Ops, yes... It's already evening here, I'll leave in an hour or so. I had planned to stay here in the shop for a couple hours this morning. Instead... . :-laf

Wifey is not so happy right now... :-{} :-laf LOL

Tomorrow Sunday... if you don't want me killed by the wifey! You don't want that! Right? :{ Anyway, you can get the update from Bob... :-laf

Work Bob... WORK! = WBW

Have a nice one.

EZ & the Smarty

Tried my VA Plug and play with the Smarty on #9... . It felt SOP that it hurt performance.

marco\Bob,

If running a Smarty with an EZ will that take away from the performance of the Smarty? (degrade actual Smarty performance)... .

Great work Marco,

Everything seems fine now. Loaded with no problems. I tried Sw#9 back to stock and Fuel saver.

Wow that #9 is really nice.

Thanks !!!!!!!

Marco, thanks for the quick response. The update went off without a hitch and I've been spending the afternoon playing around with different programs.

This is called FUN!

I figured I'd best get back to the house before I got myself into trouble with the local constables. :-laf

I'm curretnly set on the fuel saver program and will be doing some mileage tests.

Thanks again for a wonderful product.

Only on 9. Run on 8 (no timing program), and it will be smooth sailing.

The problem is, you are stacking timing, on more timing, and there is a point of diminsihing returns...

Thanks! Bob was gracious enough to let a bunch of the NW Bombers try out the Smarty at a Bombing Party last wekend & while I definately noticed improved performance, my perceived difference between the sticks and auto trans was pretty significant. Of course I had my EZ hooked up & I'm running small (275s) injectors as well -vs- Mach 1. 6s... Come on TAX refund!

any usb cable will work, do you have a usb printer or any other usb device?

Oooo! didn't think about the printer.

I'll check in the AM when I get home. I know the one for my camera is too small.

Thanks Bob

Actually, the odd-numbered programs all advance timing. Stick with the even-numbered programs if you are stacking with a timing box like Edge or Van Aaken.

That's what he was saying:

8=even #, no timing... ;) :D

And that's the answer to what Smarty programs work with which xxx box. Thanks, just was not obvious to me EXACTELY how to do this.

Now another question, If I use the Edge Comp only on level 1 ie not pump wire tap, then it is not adding any timing right?, and therefore I can use any Smarty program with the COmp on level 1 and NO PUMP WIRE TAP?

True?, False?

Bob Weis

Let's talk about timing and towing and the advantages of the remarkable SMARTY programmer.

Bob Weis, to answer your question, an Edge Comp on level 1 is the same as an EZ, ie no wire tap and TIMING ADVANCE only. Use SMARTY sw #8, the Special CaTCHER version with no timing stacked with your favorite timing box.

Justin Hohn said something in his report of his cross country beta test I did not agree with. "HO trucks can get away with more timing advance than a SO because of the higher compression"

Actually the reverse of this is true. In an HO, one would enjoy retarded timing. A SO can get away with more timing due to it's LOWER compression ratio.

Why?

Because advancing the timing in a diesel engine RAISES peak cylinder pressure. In a High Output Cummins with a HIGHER CR, peak cylinder pressure becomes astronomical, which is the ' sop power increase ' we all enjoy so much.

Now, take that cylinder pressure and compound it with the drive pressure associated with using a turbo producing boost WAY outside of it's mapwidth because your exhaust housing is too small, it has a boost elbow or a j hook on it.....

... . or your'e towing a trailer. Now your cylinder pressure is something out of a science fiction novel and your headgasket isn't a gasket anymore.

Marco's CaTCHER development encountered excessive timing in the upper rpm range that hindered performance of owner's with big injectors. Marco solved this 'advanced injection timing' or more fuel sooner with big injectors with the Special CaTCHER, his reduced timing version. SW #8 for all you SMARTY guys.

Bottom line, Get a SMARTY and sell your timing boxes.
