My real question is, can I scrap the Edge and the pump tap and not loose performance? I also use the Edge to limit smoke in normal driving and towing. Anyone know?

I'm still a little concerned about flashing my ECM and not having the original stock code to flash back. (I've never had it updated except to change out the PCM for the DTT transmission upgrade. ) I heard too many stories about Dealers updating ECM's and resulting problems such as power decreases, etc. It runs good now, I'm just a little concerned. (The mind races... )

The REAL experts will no doubt show up with more expert replies than mine, but it has been my understanding the earlier CaTCHER, nor the new Smarty will produce as much total power as the Edge Comp, they both primarily move the engine response curve down to lower RPM, along with a total HP boost about the same as an Edge EZ would.

Thus, the Smarty, combined with the Comp, SHOULD deliver additional power gains over and above the Smarty alone, along with the incremental settings provided by the Comp.

I'm like you, and a bit apprehensive about losing the OEM, non-flashed ECM programming in my ECM, and being forced into accepting the supposedly latest and greatest ECM upgrades the Smarty apparently comes installed with in the event I want to return my ECM to "stock".

I guess it's a calculated risk, and price to be paid for an otherwise great performance improver. :D

My PERSONAL findings with the DC's software updates.

In the early days of the second gen trucks, DC had really problems with them updates. Looked like they fixed one thing but screwed then another.

Sometimes in late 2001 they came up with a new series of updates which fixed all the previous prolems. Since then DC has not released new updates for the second gen trucks. I've tested a lot of the older softwares, none of them is up to par to the new ones. I feel pretty comfortable telling you that an Smarty updated stock software is at LEAST as good as the previous one.

Gary,

Yours is a very good example since you own a 02 truck.

There has been NO updates to the software for the 02's. In poor words, the software in Smarty = the one you got from the factory!

You have nothing to worry about.

marco,
I have tryed both my "stock" ecm and my catcher in Cooold weather and neither has triggered the high idle or 3cyl idle are you sure it came in the ecm in 02 and on my catcher-special. I don't really need the high idle in fact it only got cold enough for it a few times here just curious as to how it sounds/works.

Thanks Marco - that eases my mind a lot - my current setup does not have the high idle activated, but even if the Smarty comes with that feature engaged, it's no big deal.

I am a little worried about loosing my original program too. The truck as a sticker saying it was up dated in 1999. I like the way it is now. When I get my new smarty this coming week, I guess it will be all lost?

Can't wait to try it out!!

What is everyone worried about the "stock" software for? You're buying the Smarty for the Catcher software! Maybe I'm in the minority but, the only time mine would be "stock" is if I had an issue that the dealer had to fix. Which is not very likely at this point with my bombs. :-laf

I seem to remember that the Smarty will hold the stock ECM setting in it when you load up a Smarty Program. So you really don't lose anything and you can restore the original software into the ECM should you have to take it in under warranty. Is this not correct?

.

I have a Comp Edge with the pump wire tapped. I understand that I will need to use setting #8 without timing. Will the #9 setting produce as much as #8 with the Edge? My real question is, can I scrap the Edge and the pump tap and not loose performance? I also use the Edge to limit smoke in normal driving and towing. Anyone know?

If you scrap the Comp, you will lose the fueling provided by holding the bypass solenoids open. Unless you compensate with bigger sticks or go to a fueling only (TST of Blue chip) box, you will lose that top end power.

I don't think you will have any trouble with the stock program Smarty puts back in except you will want one of the CaTCHER programs back. :-laf

Nope. The ecm won't let the Smarty "download" the software. Marco covered this somewhere in this HUGE thread. Good luck finding it. :-laf

I'm a little confused whether Smarty is pre loaded with all the different stock soft wares or whether it remembers the one you first had. I'm pretty sure you will have the high idle feature enabled.

I think this is what I was refering too. I looks like the stock software for the truck is in the Smarty if I read this correct. You guys tell me what you see below

Quote"1) From Marco - Ten different CaTCHER softwares on board for each truck type.

Yup, 10. From mild to wild, there's one for each taste.

There are 30 different truck types in the years 98. 5-02. That means Smarty has 10X30 = 300 different CaTCHER softwares on board plus 30 stock softwares. In all 330 softwares. MAN getting them together was a though job!

I'll take one of what ever you are drinking. :D

I run mine mostly on SW7.

Stock sucks... .

Got mine yesterday, tested today. #9 feels stronger than the old CaCHER program in my ECM which is earased now. Feels so good I may not tap the pump wire again.
