Had to share

FWIW! Pay Attention at the Diesel Pumps!!!

I don't think the CARB folks had any awareness that some '98 model Dodge diesels were mechanical and not electronic. Oh well. We'll see what happens. I'll post the results of my smog check.

I'm still looking for suggestions for a decent smog shop here in the OC...

That was smart of VW. Back in the Fall of '97, who would have predicted that a vehicle manufactured in Oct '97 would be subjected to a new mandate in 2010?

JacobsonD-

have you looked at your engine data plate on the timing gear cover?

mine with a build date of 9-97 says-

this engine conforms to calif regulations applpcable to 1997 modle-year medium-duty

vehicles.

I wonder what the smog tech would say about that. mines not due for 2 more years.

Smogged today

Took my truck down today for smog and passed eventually. Before i took it in i removed chip, intake horn, intake, meth monitor, installed stock cat/resenator in front of 4 in muffler, let codes clear for 2 days and passed visual/obd scan no problem. The snap test was a bit of a hang up but after showing the tech the video online he passed it. Tech didnt even bother looking for a cat/resenator or muffler, Quote "book says it doesnt need one". Even though i took the time to put them back in.

Competent smog shops in your town.

We should start a thread devoted to competent smog shops in various locations. I've got until 12-2011. :)

JohnRobinson:

Good question. I'll have to look at the engine data plate. I'll post in a few days when I get home.

I like the idea of a thread somewhere on the TDR for competent smog shops.

Are aftermarket CAI good for visual w/o a CARB EO#... . ? I see from the first page of this thread that they are good w/o, but after talking to a couple smog diesel techs. They will fail you unless it has a EO#. . If the MAF/IAT sensors on the aftermarket CAI is in a different location than where the stock location is at, they said that what fails you, not neccesarly the CAI itself.

Anyone in the SF Bay Area (North Bay) have a smog check on thier truck yet? Hoping to find a place in the local area to smog our diesel trucks (actually knows diesels). There is a place in Sacramento (Citrus Heights), EZ Smog ($50) who are familiar w/ diesels and smogging procedures. May be worth it for me to take a 90 min+ ride to get a smog, if nothing around here.

So do you suppose that means that a PSM-type modded OEM CAI would pass, since it is stock EXCEPT for the additional hole cut in the bottom.

That would be nice, since alot of guys are doing it... .

JohnRobinson:

Finally got home from a trip and popped the hood on my '98. The engine data plate also indicates that the engine conforms to regulations applicable to 1997 model-year vehicles.

I'll post back when I learn more. I'm still looking for a smog shop in Orange County or Northern San Diego county.

JacobsonD;

That does sound like good news.

Looks like you will be the first to post about a 12v vers a 24v.

Cant wait to hear the outcome, please keep us posted, good luck.

John

just got my notice. looking for some place in south bay, torrance, etc. see places that do smog but leary. i'm asking around to see if anyone i know has a place that might know what their looking at. as soon as it gets done i'll post experience.

Is there any available information that tells whether CA will be testing trucks "under load" or not? I see info from other states that say they use a dyno, but didn't see anything like that for CA.

My truck (see sig. ) generates zero visible smoke on the highway, in any gear at any speed, with Smarty #0. However, sitting in the driveway in neutral, I get a brief puff of smoke if I start at 2000rpm and floor it.

No dyno load for the smogging.

Here is a link for testing diesels that the techs will use (unless changed otherwise). When you click on the link and pops up. Just throw any name in there and hit continue. It will go through the whole process w/ slides and videos.

"My understanding of the test: the engine is taken up to 2000rpm and “snapped” up to a 3000rpm threshold. "

That conflicts with the presentation linked to in post #135. The presentation says "start at idle, and snap to [somewhere between 2000 and 3000] rpm. "

getting ready to do smog test tomorrow. so today i was "cleaning up" the engine. i have an old van aken, one of the old metal ones i've had on since truck was new. guess what? etched into it is CARB D-500. when entered into the site to check for approved can bus pump controllers it is good. however, here is a catch, i have and 01' and they are a valid eo for 1998 1/2 and 1999. so some of you guys with these years if you have a van aken box are legal but still might have a snap test problem. mine didn't smoke any more with than without by my eye. since the box is off i'm not chancing it yet. I'll talk to the guy tomorrow on it after i get tested. here's the info from carb for what its worth:

Any one with an exhaust brake pass the test? I read the chart saying exhaust brakes require CARB. I have a BD and am concerned to say the least ...

In the chart in post #2 of this thread, "Exhaust Brake Systems" are listed in the column titled "No CARB OE is Required".

EDIT: Additionaly, according to page G-6 of this BAR document, Exhaust Brakes don't require a CARB Executive Order.
