I just received this from Edge products.

From: "Edge Tech" <tech@edgeproducts.com>Add sender to ContactsTo: "Richard Morris" <ricknadine1111@sbcglobal.net>Richard,

If you remove the product from the truck it will pass. If you do some research you will find that none of the aftermarket diesel products have current CARB certification. This is because CARB does not have a test for aftermarket diesel products. If there is no test, we cannot get certification. We have submitted all of our products for testing but have not heard anything back in a while. You will be informed as soon as we have news on CARB certification.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

Are there exempt counties?

Yes, the counties which right now do NOT require a smog check evry 2 years to register your gasser vehicle, also will NOT require a biennial smog certificate to register your diesel vehicle. You WILL still be required to present a smog certificate upon PURCHASE of a new or post-1998 used diesel in those counties, but you wil NOT be required to smog test it every 2 years.

Here is a link to a map that shows the requirements for smog testing for GAS vehicles. The only information that is pertinent on it are the GREY areas.

http://smogcheck.ca.gov/80_BARResources/02_SmogCheck/Engineering/Program_Map.pdf

The grey areas are the counties that require smog testing only on change of ownership/transfer of title, so it is those areas that are exempt from biennial testing for GAS vehicles. Therefore, according to the memo which I linked to previously in this thread, they will ALSO be exempt from biennial diesel smog testing.

PLEASE KNOW that I have NO idea if the counties which are dual colored will be exempt or non exempt from diesel smog testing. Please ONLY use this map to see if you live in a county that is completely GRAY.

Someone may want to call about the dual colored areas, however, I think that in short, the California DMV registration of your gasser vehicle has NOT required smog testing every 2 years, then the same will be true of the DMV registration of your post-1998 diesel vehicle. Sorry for the long post... I hope that makes sense.

dresslered: I hate to be stupid but how are they going to know what injectors you have in your engine? I would think that they would have to pull an injector & compare it with a stock injector & I don't think any of the inspectors are smart enough to do that.

JMetzger,

Sorry about that, I didn't mean to imply that I was worried about my injectors being an issue as the RV275's don't smoke and they are also used in RV applications. My only concern would be the DD TTPM which is sitting in plain view. I do recall them claiming to be CARB certified somehow but I might be wrong.

On a finer note, I got my Kalifornia registration today for $385 and there was no requirement for a smog check. I am in Santa Cruz County which is easier than the other counties in the area.

Well I went for it and just bought an 05 quad cab long bed 4x4 Laramie with DDP 90 injectors, BD Special B turbo, CFM plenum, AFE megacannon, 5" turbo back exhaust, SkyJacker 4", some kinda 20" bling wheels, Smarty TNT sw9, boost, pyro, trans gauges, and a GB transmission laminate flex plate with billet shafts. 8k on the transmission and 75k total. So I went straight to the Corte Madera DMV office in Marin County with title in hand and current regs. I paid the sales tax and title transfer and no issue at all about smog. No questions at all. The vin does end in an even, and expires in august. So my only guess is that the policy has not made it's way down to the field offices yet? I am anticipating having to do this come august when the government machine catches up to itself. I have the stock turbo and a fellow TDR member has hooked me up big time with the vital stock exhaust components, thanks Joe. In the mean time I have ditched the TNT#9 for Revo#3 and am becoming familiar with my new truck.

I just got my DMV renewal notice due 4/30/10. Near the top of the notice is "SMOG Certification Required... "

I guess I'm the guinea pig. Where's my prize? My vin ends in 8 and I received delivery of my truck in April '04. My truck is stock except for a timing device, which I'll remove, and a FASS 95 I installed when my lift pump failed at 42,000 miles. I'll post more when I get more info.

Regcabguy, where did you get your camper? I sold one like it to a guy that lived near the border in '04.

I bought mine new@ American Sales in Stanton,OC in 2000. Most trouble-free and practical thing I ever bought. On the Cummins Diesel Forum there's a guy by the forum name of Ram'n it. He's a licensed diesel and auto smog tech up your way. Might be worth a drive to have a test performed by a Dodge owner. The subjective smoke test is the scary one. The aftermarket lift pumps/filters can stay.

So many people here in Ca are gonna crap twice when the renewal notice comes in the mail. First laod comes from the price of registration and the second load stems from SMOG CERTIFICATE REQUIRED!

emission testing

hello to all! been a member for a while, just getting started posting, please forgive any errors. just had my truck emission tested today and thought the process might be of interest to other members. I live in ct. where emissions are tested every two years at a cost of $20. the entire test took less than five min. and consisted of a tailpipe sniffer with readings taken at idle and under load on a dyno, the only parameter being opacity of exhaust. my truck passed easily with a reading of 1. 1% where 20% is max. I'm not sure of process in other states but thats how its done here. whew! made it thru my first post :D

Does anyone have a diesel friendly smog shop they'd recommend in Orange County? I got my renewal notice the other day and need a smog check.

How do they plug into a '98 12V? There aren't any engine electronics that I know of. So does that mean they just do a visual check and then the snap idle check?

Sweatin'...

My guess is it is a SNAFU. In the bill it states "diesel-powered vehicles

manufactured after the 1997 model-year", but I bet they did not realize things did not change until Jan 1, 1998.

Just my $. 02

You're probably correct, but knowing the great state of California, the tech will expect to see a 24v and then ticket the 12v owner for tampering. LOL!

I guess it would have been better to put the manufactured date instead of model year. I know that with the last change in Diesel emissions for CA, Volkswagen reportedly made as many diesel cars in advance of the deadline and then halted production on diesels until their cars met the new standard. That way they could still sell a new diesel car but it was made prior to the cut off. Brilliant!
