FWIW! Pay Attention at the Diesel Pumps!!!

Cliff, I looked at the manual for my 01 2500 and it is pretty ambiguous. It looks like it was written by lawyers and aimed mostly at the gas motors with just a few references to our diesel's. From what I can tell though, it seems like 2 trips would satisfy the computer. You need to go from cold to normal on the motor with maybe a couple of city and freeway miles each time.
Good luck.

I'm still trying to find the EGR valve and tube and associated gaskets and hardware. The local Dodge dealer says the tube is $350 and the EGR valve is about $400. The parts guy at the dealership didn't need a VIN nor an engine number. I asked him if the parts he was quoting were for a 12V or 24V. He said, yes. I told him there were two different engines used in '98 and he said the parts he's quoting me are for the turbo engine, not the non-turbo diesel. I told him both the 12V and 24V motors are turbocharged. He responded with a moment of silence and then said these were the right parts. I'm not so sure, but I like his pricing.

I also called a local Cummins diesel shop and parts place. They required the engine serial number before looking up any parts. They quoted the EGR valve at $1059. 33, and the EGR tube at $248. 00. That's a huge difference, but at least this parts guy knew what he was talking about.

Has anyone bought these parts lately and know what they should cost? I'm trying to get this all done over the phone while traveling. When I get home in a few days, I want all the parts ready to pick up so I can get this job done and pass my SMOG check.

You guys aren't going to believe this but I PASSED my smog! Yep! Twins and W/M injection all hooded up and installed. He looked right at it. As a matter of fact he was very meticulous when he was looking over the engine with his little flashlight. I was his 2nd diesel too smog. IMO he didn't know what he was looking for in terms of diesel upgrades. Funny thing is he almost failed me because on don't have catalytic converter. I kept telling the guy that there is no cat on my year truck. He finally agreed.

Congrats. Good luck on round#2

Wow, that is cool you passed. . be ready for the next go around, you might not be as lucky. All the tech had to do was read on the side of the engine plate where is says "No Catalyst" or Catalyst not required.

I think "Read" or the "lack of" is the key word here.

at least by the second go around we will have a clue of where to go and some consistancy of what they will look for.

Good deal Cliff. How many trips do you think it took for the computer to be ready for testing?

Didn't keep track of the miles but drove it around town here and there for a couple of days. Only 2 "not ready's" cleared out. Then drove to work on Monday (about 100 miles round trip) and the remaining "not ready" fuel system code sill hadn’t cleared out. Smog tech said that gassers will pass with 2 not ready codes but he didn’t know about diesels. So I went for it. Oo.

Just got this from Edge: Database: Aftermarket Parts Database of Executive Orders in Its a link to Products in Progress, items that may not need pulling. Products on the list will not be cause for a vehicle failing Smog Check even in the absence of an EO. Database: Aftermarket Parts Database of Executive Orders

good find. i missed the products in progress. i did go do a search for eo's listed by manufacturer. look under fuel system mod and you'll find eo's for banks, bully dog, tst, transfer flow. folks that have 98s and 99s will see a lot of eo's on these for their trucks. for later years from 2000 up the aftermarket guys in diesel seem to have just not applied. my van aken has a eo but for 98/99 so i yanked it for test. i figure that if they ever get to a roadside type of check the eo stamped on side of box might get me thru.

My interpretation of Edges statement at the bottom of the page says I should be good to go..... I guess. 1999?

Regarding the Use of Edge Products in California

Edge has submitted their full line of aftermarket performance products for testing to ensure they are in compliance with the California Air Resources Board's (CARB) standards. Currently, all of Edge's products for gasoline-powered vehicles have received CARB Executive Orders (E. O. s) and are legal for sale and use on gasoline-powered pollution-controlled vehicles in California. The rest of Edge's products have been submitted for testing or are in an E. O. -pending process. Until/unless Edge receives E. O. s for these products signifying compliance with CARB's standards, Edge's diesel-performance products are not legal for sale or use on 2003 and newer pollution-controlled diesel vehicles in California.

I didn't see the EdgeEZ on the list. I don't think my truck would pass the exhaust visual smoke test. I still make some smoke on the lowest setting. I have Mach 1. 6 injuectors, SuperB turbo and the EdgeEZ. Love the set up, power level, fuel mileage... . everything works great.

My registration isn't due until November so I'm sure there's lots more to come... horror stories and happy endings.

Just smogged my 99' last week. No visual smoke test, no nothing. He just typed the info on the computer and sent it through the paces. I was outta there in 10min tops. I think it's really going to depend on where you go. I called a few places, one guy told me it would fail because it has gauges. Call around before you waste your time and money. There are still a lot of shops that really don't know what they're looking for. In this state though i can't say i blame them. The fear of being shut down is probably what causing most of the paranoia.

I can't trust the bureacratic mode of operation of the smog testing. One of the main reasons I went diesel. Now after some review, I think that I can completely body off, re-build or re-store my 97 disel p/u for less money than I would pay for a new truck and avoid the hit or miss with the smog testing.
