FWIW! Pay Attention at the Diesel Pumps!!!

To get a carb. approval number the manufacturer has to do a lot of testing with the state to prove that the product will NOT increase the smog emitted above the stock levels, under ALL conditions. a lot of the tuners and modifications people do to their diesels will increase the smog emmissions by a very large ammount. putting them on to make a lot of horse power and to make your self feel good, with out care about the air you and I breathe, makes me mad !! I do not want to hear you snivel about having to take them off and back on again. It always has been against federal and state law to remove smog equipment or put on equipment that increases smog. some manufacturers are working to get carb numbers, and I applaud these guys. but there are others who are not trying to get a carb number because of the COST of the testing, and I have nothing but disrespect for them to keep selling their products. you guys that reccomend regestering your truck in another county to get away from the bi-anual smog checks, earn my never ending disrespect, and I really hope you pay your fines and penalties with a smile when you get caught. as more and more states start smog testing, the more we all have to work to keep our trucks clean, smog legal, and powerful. it can be done. it is our responsibility to know the laws and obey them, no matter how we feel about them. once we know the laws, we can make intelligent decisions about how to modify our trucks without destroying the environment. :-laf:-laf

Interesting so what you are saying is when you go into be tested there is limits you must test to pass emissions. Now if I put on a device that improves my emissions but has no CARB number I fail which improves your clean air and breath ability. If the device I add to improve performance and has no CARB number but still passes I fail as well. Sorry don't see the logic!!!! I am not talking about nor did I say anything about removal or modification of Federal mandated emission devices. Having said that though the same logic should apply though. The big difference is the Federal government is not getting any monetary gain. Where as CARB members get paid a salary and have job security even if they are not qualified or have any expertise in this area. Yes I have read about some of the board members as others have. It also bothers me some that for what ever reason some in California are arrogant enough to believe they not only knows what is best for California but all other States and the world if you ask them. Some where i missed something in school about the universe revolving around California.

To stringent and over jealous requirements are driving business from your state resulting in loss in taxes not helping but making your budget woes worse(its happening all over to some extent but worse in California). Note I did not say reasonable requirements here. Your cost of living is going up even faster now as modification of commercial vehicles cost are being included in raising product cost including groceries, etc.

What I said was it should not matter what you bolt on for what ever reason should not automatically fail the test results should. If the emission level you are tested to is not good enough make it more stringent. What you bolt on and if it has a CARB number makes absolutely no sense. I have a feeling though if your truck throws a code during testing that has absolutely nothing to do with emissions levels and you would have passed the test you will not be a happy camper. I could be wrong you might enjoy the process to repeat emissions testing multiple times and the expense of fixing items not remotely emissions related to pass.

Now what I think your complaining about is people that disconnect and reconnect after testing. What if the devices does not cause you to test beyond limits then the question is mute you would know that if allowed to keep them on. I have not heard about this in awhile but there used to be a portable device that could check your emissions as you drive by. Perhaps you would advocate random road side testing of ALL vehicles(don't be discriminatory you have seen none diesel vehicles needing help) as they do now with scales for commercial trucks and safety inspections. That would resolve your concerns; have to increase your taxes a little more and some inconvenience to you on occasion to be randomly tested. So you should be all for this and to your surprise it would not bother me either if I am traveling in California and they test me. Of course it is my right not to cross the border into California and spend any money to aide in your economy as well. I only go there now because my Dad and Mom lives there he being 90 with only 20% use of his heart and Mom 84 otherwise would not bother me if you put up the equivalent of the Berlin Wall. I can get to all other States without going through California.

Ok off the soap box and will not respond further on this subject. I live in Arizona and while we have emissions which as yet is not anywhere near like California I really don't have a dog in this fight. :-laf

How do you really feel?????

For the past several years, I have been smog exempt be it my 67 bug or the fact that both of my daily drivers were diesels. I now have an '06 Armada which will be my first experience with smog in several years.

Now on with the story, the last car I had to smog was an 1990's model S10 about 5 years ago. I bought it from a neighbor who wrecked it for $100 and I put it back together and of course had to smog it. I went to one shop and it failed. I went to another shop and it passed. It only passed because the tech at the second shop ran the test in a different gear than the first shop (manual trans).

My point is that the fact that we have to test them is a joke. There's no real way to 100% recreate the real world in a testing environment. How do they know whether I run at 25mph in 2nd gear or 3rd gear?

I think that the smog check system should be completely overhauled. Do a smog check on a dyno at various speeds, rpm ranges and loads and then maybe also have those spot checks we see from time to time on freeway onramps. Most important, it should not matter what I have bolted to my car as long as it always runs as clean or cleaner than stock based on the smog check.

You gotta wonder what went wrong here? We went from one of the best states overall with more than it's share of natural wonders and cheap living to this?

That's a simple one, it's the liberals and the morons that voted in Boxer, Feinstein and the rest of the bunch.

Does anybody know where the chart from the 2nd post came from? I am looking for it at the CARB website and I cannot find it.

Would be nice to have the source for when I go to get my smog check

UTAH SMOG check

In the state of Utah, there are currently 3 counties that require a smog test on Diesels, and they have been doing the testing for several years. They put the truck on a Dyno, and run it up to 50 MPH, then load the dyno so there is 50 percent load on the truck. They then read the level of pc10's and if you are in compliance for the year truck you have, your good to go, otherwise get it fixed.

Davis county is so lame, mine never passes the first test, they seldom get it past 2k rpm before they do whatever their wot test is on the dyno.

There's also no (findable) published protocol here allowing you to find out what they're doing hosed up. I have an HO w/5600 trans and it WILL smoke when you do what these clownz do with it. It always passes when they are over 2100 rpms... . but you have to hope that you don't tick off their tech when you try to explain it to them... (gotta get the turbo up there). Plus their "inspection" adds another 90 bucks to their registration EVERY year..... what a racket... .
PLUS you can look to the south here and see the refineries just maxed out and belching nasty foul smell'n crap in the air.....

AND the media puts the air quality here ALL off on the automotive traffic here...

hmmmm. . guess who's paying their checks huh???

Just smog today think I knew more about the Diesel smog than he did, but I talked him through it. Took a copy of the CARB paper work with me that covered my Edge juice. Just glad I didn't have to change anything out to smog it

I was on the CA DMV website the other night & it said emissions weren't required on diesels. I'm more confused now than ever... ... Unless the weight was over 16k...

Quote from the CA DMV: EXEMPTIONS

A vehicle is exempt from smog testing when:

1. It is a diesel vehicle.

2. It is an electric powered vehicle.

3. It is a gas powered vehicle which weighs more than 14,000 pounds.

4. A hybrid vehicle.

5. A motorcycle.

6. A trailer.

7. It is made in 1975 or before.

If your vehicle is less than six years old, you will not need to have an emissions test carried out. But you will have to pay an annual smog abatement fee of $24. This does not apply to a custom built car made after 1976.

To go along with what klaybus wrote I was in Fremont, CA this weekend & went with my son to get his Durango smoged & I asked the inspector what problems they were finding with diesels & he said that they don't smog diesels in CA & showed me the same DMV Exemptions, so who is right. Glad I don't live in CA.

A little more info from the page I referenced with a link.

VEHICLES THAT REQUIRE AN EMISSIONS TEST

Vehicles that are not listed in the exempt list below, and registered in all counties except six require a smog inspection. In the six counties (El Dorado, Placer, Riverside, San Bernardino, San Diego, Sonoma) tests are required only within certain zip codes.

Just Passed California Smog Inspection with Edge Juice with Attitude

:-laf:-laf I was going to remove the Edge prior to the inspection, Read here at TDR, that all Edge Products have been submitted to CARB for approval, until then we're OK. Until a decision or Order is issued. If it's not approved you have until your next inspection to remove it (2 years). Tech looked for all factory smog related equipment, Checked OBDII, Smoke check... $40. 57 for the inspection here in Oakhurst. Oo. Oo.
