Guys I need some help here!
Driving to Wisconsin to drop off a bike. After driving for about 3 hours, looked down at the gauges and noticed smoke coming from my ignition switch. Being a highly trained fireman
, I figured this to be in the bad category!
Well to make a long story short, I found the electrical component of the ignition switch too hot to touch and discolored, once I finally removed the column. Being in the middle of nowhere, I let it cool off and drove it the remainder of the way without it getting warm to touch? It was fine the remainder of the night and through this a. m. I went to local dodge dealer and lo and behold, they had the switch in stock. I installed it and went about 40 miles, and in a very short time, the whole assembly became too hot to touch.
Pulled over and found the hottest wire was the blk/red wire that led into the connector. I tried to trace it and was unable to, (it went up into the depths of the dash). So finally, I ended up cutting the wire.
It ended up disabling the radio, overhead light, windows and I am sure something else? But no more heat emanating from the switch

So what I can figure out, is: The wire is going to ground in the switch. To me and my limited knowledge means one of the above has a bad ground? Any pointers or thoughts? Thanks guys!
