Got in the truck this AM and went to Stanley Idaho is was 0 dark thirty when I left and couldnt see if truck was smoking at that time. We stoped in Salmon Id to get fuel (its cheaper in ID than in MT) added the same amount of snake oil to the fuel and went on my way. Got on the Freeway real hard as to not make a big truck driver angry#@$%!. I always look back to see if im setting up a smoke screen and still none. Got to Stanley and made a fuel transfer from the AUX tank to the Trk tank. Picked up the tack for my new mule's and went to lunch. So now the truck is running on ID fuel and got back on the big road and got on the throttle and man it looked like I was working for the Vector control folks. All the instruments read the same pyro/trans/boost/fuel press before and after the filters/rear diff truck ran VERY GOOD to good. I stoped and took a fuel sample out the Aux tank and tested it for Gas( a gift from the Chemist and Chevron before I left. NONE. I dont have or havent had the Cat on for at least 2 years. Any Idea's of why the smoke? took a Oil sample and sent it off. But the truck runs great.

Altitude and temperature comes to mind and both add to smoke.

Are you running anything for tuning?

Sometimes after a long day of mild highway cruising I will get a little more smoke on acceleration as the added volume and temp of the exhaust cleans off the cylinder walls.

Did it quit after that one big puff or is it still doing it?

Muffler likes to soot up and when you nail it, POOF it all comes out. Without the CAT your probably generating more soot that will build up in steady running. Higher altitudes are worse for it.

It did it all the way home when I mashed on it. When I got home I took and oil sample sent it off and drained the Truck tank and put in some fuel from a station that I use and although its not as bad it still smokes more than it did. Im thinking some of the other fuel was still in the tank (couldnt get it all ). Took the AUX tank fuel to FIL he has a diesel tractor and refuel with known fuel. I guess time will tell.

No No Tuning just stock. Im kind of leaning toward the removal of the Cat. When I took that off I also installed Stans Headers system with the big Donaldson muff. When I moved to MT I got the Truck registered the wife reminded me that I did reinstall the Cat because I didnt know what to expect from the MT DMV. When I removed the Cat (test pipe) and put in the Cat there was more soot in the Cat than I thought there should be. I guess the bouncing around in transit from CA to MT. I could take off the Test pipe and look in the end of the muff no big deal to do. I had the wife take it down the driveway about 400 yards I told her to stomp on it (she got this glazed over look and smile) it did smoke some but not nearly as much as in ID. I also changed the filters at the same time as the fuel removal

Sense I have removed the fuel and changed the filters the smoke has diminished . Still waiting for the oil sample results.
