anyone snowmobile? what do ya have? where do you go? any stories?



i've got a ton, but i'd just keep babblin on so... .

Oh heck yea, 6 and counting, plus i get to sled year round. Only thing when there isn't snow I go a 1/4 mile at a time. 1 sled is a full time asphalt sled xlt600sp, 1 sled does both Doo F3 800, beater sled 87 Trail, My sled xlt600, wifes Classic Touring, backup sled 98 Trail.



Mostly ride Land O Lakes WI North and east.

snowmachines.....

In Alaska they're snowmachines... and we have 4 of them. My

primary ride is a Ski-Doo 800 High Mark with an M-10 suspension.

I've only ridden outside of Alaska once on a trip to Dawson. I like

deep snow and boondocking.

you can see mine in my signature. it has a clutch kit, chip, and super single coated pipe--really makes the machine get up and go!



how was the snow last year? it was pretty bad, 55* one day where we were in sweaters (someone had a T shirt on). did a lot of water skimming of small ponds in the trail but it's illegal this upcoming year (i haven't done anything more than 80ft myself).



Rangeley Lake (rangeley, ME) had 2 inches of water after that 55* day on top. that was one scary ride!! our group (the Death Crazy Snowmobiling group--a big joke among us) were a couple miles out when all of a sudden about 4 inches of water starting running at us like a wave. i'm pretty sure it was the very small pressure ridge opening up that i had seen in the morning. we all tried to get off and did at 10mph with extreme backshifting. now that was a freaking ride :--) ... took the road back into town!



melted my pistons twice... just rebuild the motor (apparently my dad installed the "9" spark plugs again and i only melted the left one this time down to the first ring). ah well, good times, good times!

2002 Sno-Pro here. I race cross country and some sno-x. I have my new sled coming and need to sell or trade my old one. (See profile).



Back when snowmobiling was fun (inside racer joke), I used to ride up around "Land 'O".



You want to talk water skipping? Run the Northwoods Challenge Terrain-X series. Nothing like coming into a corner, sticking your knee out and having a nice chilled wall of water come off the ski and up the inside of your leg to your nether regions!



Better yet, just south of Land O'lakes between Conover and Star Lake is a place called Bauer's Dam. It's a great place to practice water crossings. There is usually a couple hundred feet of open water to play in and it isn't too deep (most of it anyway ).



I watched a couple drunk guys see how close to the edge of the water they could get before nailing the throttle and still make it across. It looked like he was going to make for a couple seconds! :-laf

Mountains

Finally a sledding thread! . I've been lucky enough to be riding mountains in BC/Alta for the past 7 years. Riding a Y2K Mountain Max 700, BOMBED with Ekholm mountain tunnel conversion, 9 tooth external drivers, Bender pipes, roller clutch, shaved head, carb spacers and a few airmiles .



I got my CTD because I was sick of pulling the mountain passes with a 318. Now I look forward to the drive nearly as much as the riding .

Snowmobiling is what I wait for all year long, winter cannot get here quick enough and leaves way to early ! I usually ride out of the Danbury, WI area but I do go to the U. P. a few times a year and also make one or two trips out to Cooke City, MT every year. Last years ride was a '02 800 Renegade that is know for sale, and I am patiently waiting for my '03 700 SKS to come in. Bring on winter!!!

I have been looking at getting a sled for a while now. Have any of you ridden the Yamaha RX-1. . is it heavy?

I have snowmobile. Getting kinda sick of it. Crappy weather. DNR f'n up trails . Dumb laws. Cost of maintaining sled. But I do like riding still. I have a fourwheeler at leats I can ride that in winter and summer. I got a harley 2 years ago. Nothing beats the freedom of the open road.

i had a dirtbike. i've driven boats, jet skis, go karts, and quad runners. snowmobiling is much better imho. beautiful scenery, fast smooth trails, and you can go as far as time will allow you to.



i've heard a lot about the Minnesota picks ban/fee. my dad and i also participated in the Yellowstone affair when that was more popular (now only 4 strokes are allowed or something like that?). man, i'd love to go to te midwest. i am a powder junky! (just the avalanches scare me).



my dad is impatiently waiting for a green Team Arctic Fircat F7 to come in. can't wait to drive that baby around the corners!

Same for us! it's the second most important thing to the diesels.

JR2, tree suck you in? Been there myself a few times, now I have a shovel and folding saw permanently stored on my sled.

Yup, its amazing how the snow will just suck you under a tree. That week was on of the best riding weeks I have ever seen. It was snowing over a foot every night for a week and the roads going South out of Anchorage where closed due Avalanches. We went Notrth to a spot that usually has decent snow and this is what we found, heaven. We cut some of the only tracks for three days.....

paychk - Yes it was. We went in from the North side and parked in the coffe shop parking lot. They guy that lives there came out and yelled "no charge today, too much snow" when I was walking up to pay the parking fee. Took off on the trail that leads up behind his shop. Went over the top of the mountain and tried to find the trail down. We didn't and ended up riding around in the trees for 4 hours finding a way out of the hole we went in. It was fantastic.

By the way, someone asked about the RX1. I have two friends that have them on order and I expect to ride one of them as soon as the snow will allow. I am not real sure I would want one due to the reliance on batteries to start it. If you are 100 miles in the middle of BFE Alaska and your batt dies you are in deep doo doo.

i saw one at snodeo in Colebrook, NH last year. it seemed to have some great snap to it. it just sounds like you're riding a motorcycle... yuck. oh well.

I hear you guys about wanting winter to come. I can't wait either as I have been roofing and framing in this 90 degree heat. Anyways, I have a 2003 Ski-Doo MXZ 800X REV on order, and a friend of mine has an RX-1 on order.



Funny story, a friend and I were in Island Pond, VT last year just taking a break on the side of the trail, which went through a christmas tree farm, when two guys pasted us going fairly slow. I don't know exactly it happened but when I looked up I saw one of the guys go into the trees. He hit one tree with his front bumper and cut it clear off at the trunk, about 3 1/2"dia, which flew over his head and onto the trail. :--). He continued to accelerate as he broke about 2-3 more trees and finally stopped. I'm laughing as I'm writing this. It wouldn't be so funny if the guy was hurt, but he was fine.

I had a 94 Storm, sold it for BOMB parts. It was TUNED!!!!

I used to get adreniline shakes.





I would like to go west and rent some year, any suggestions?
