I have a 94' with a custom cut plate and 16 housing still running HX35,
My question is what next should I go for? 300 injectors or 370 injectors? my governor is kicked up a little by my own tuning, Dave Mitchell the "white dodge" has helped me out some, but it will not carry enough fuel, should I get a govenor spring kit? Should I send my pump to a very good shop in my area that does Super and Pro stock pulling tractor pumps and have them put it on a pump stand? You guys have done it all here and I'm a newbie so you tell me what's the best and best order, remember I already have and bigger plate and some rpm's and a 16 housing, I am getting 36 to 38 on the boost gauge and around 1200 degress before the charger on my pryo. Thanks for the help.

If you can, goto Dave's Diesel in Muncie, Indiana. The pump tech, JD, is a god with a P pump. I know of other diesel shops that send their high preformance pumps to them to get worked on. Get "stacked n jacked" to give to detailed directions. When I have my pump adusted, it will be done by them even though there are quite a few shops alot closer than the 3 hour drive to Muncie.

I have just finished having 370
injectors installed in my 96'
Dodge. Koa Man also did the
same thing to his and I can
tell you that we are both VERY
happy with the results. I
highly recommend the governor
spring and the AFC spring kit.
You will definitely notice a
difference in the throttle
response. It sounds as though
you are on the right track
already!

I believe Joe Donnelly and
Piers can and will advise you
similarly. They were both very
helpful to myself and Koa Man.

"Jff24Gordn" has given you
the name of a good shop near
him. I would also like to
recommend "Scheid Diesel. "
They have shops in Terre Haute
and Lafayette, Indiana and
also one in Effingham, Illinois.
You can contact Dan Scheid(Owner)
or John Pezan (J. P. ) at the
Terre Haute shop @ 1-800-669-1593.
Like "Dave's Diesel" in Muncie
they do all the pump work right
there in their shops and have
been doing it for a long time!

They are friendly, knowledgable
people and they stand behind
their work. They also support
the TDR and it's members as
evidenced by their recent rally
in Terre Haute and before that
in Effingham. They also are doing
research on engine and pump
combinations (EX: 24 Valve Eng.
with a P7100 pump) to help their
customers and they build diesel
racing engines for the big tractor
pullers.

Sorry to go on so long about
this "SmokinCummins" but I have
been "screwed" by diesel shops
that DON'T know what they are
doing here in N. C. and believe
me "It isn't fun!"

Hope this has helped you!

Our closest shop is in COLUMBUS, Columbus Diesel, my cousins pull super and pro stock tractors and have good conections at that shop, they are the one's that do Smokin Dave Mitchell's pumps from what I've heard, You know the one white dodge always hooked to a sled that looks like he's burning coal in his engine! The tech I talked to said he'd be glad to do something for me especially since he knew my cousins, but should I go with 370's first or govenor spring kit first ???

95' 2500 standard trans. 2wd reg cab 120,000 miles bone stock but not for long I hope.
Now on order, TST #4 plate kit, 370 Diamond B injectors, Afc spring kit, Gov. spring kit.

The 160 hp pumps usually need high flow delivery valves with the 370s but the result is great. BD can sell you a rebuilt P pump upgraded to the 180 hp barrels and spec'ed at 300+ hp, or other setups (you can contact me for details if you wish). It seems you have been seeking help from several sources. It's good to get a consensus where possible, but your truck may run its best with a combination of parts that has been found to work together. Make your final moves in accord with the recommendations of the advisor you settle on as your prime source. All the things you metion can help, but to get them to work together is the important thing. Also, different sources label stuff differently. Not everyone's 370 injectors are the same thing, for example.

Thanks Everybody the input is great

Alot of guys we pull with, some of the boys from Indiana that are with JVD and Van Haisely said that I don't want the 370's because they were dumping too much fuel all the time even when they weren't trying to they just do. Anybody with the 300's happy I am willing to get my pump worked on but not buy a new one they are very costly. I really didn't want to have to change to a HX 40 either rode in a ton of them there just to slow acting and on the pulling track they haven't impressed me at all they almost need a 35 with a 9mm housing in front of them to get them going it seems like. So is anybody with the 300 horse injectors like them or dislike them tell me please just riding everybody for some info and learning after every reply. Thanks alot you guys are great!!

I used and dyno tested the 300 injectors. With stron torque plates, they gave about 20 hp more at the bottom, a sag or reduction in hp in mid range, and a small gain--10 or 20 hp--above 2000. With the stock torque plate, however, they gave around 20-30 hp gain everywhere.

SmokinCummins:

I saw your concerns about the 370'S
"dumping too much fuel, all the time. "

Before I talked to Joe Donnelly and
BD I thought that too. But after the
installation of the 370'S I really
watched my fuel mileage on the way
back home from Indiana. The difference
was between 3-4 tenths per gallon LESS
than before. I posted a good rundown
on this under the title "370injs, gov.
sprg. kit/AFC sprg. kit.

After I got home I checked my mileage
"in-town" (stop+go,traffic lights etc. )
The difference here was about 5 tenths
LESS per gallon than with the stock
180 injectors.

Well you guys have convinced me, now with my small pump where do I get some delivery valves, do I want to put them in or is it better to have someone else do it I work on Mack's all day and night sometimes. I'm pretty good with my hands and tools but I've never torn into a pump that's my dad's part of the repairs but he's never put a set in. Do I have to have them, I suppose I do or Joe wouldn't of mentioned it. Ok I'm set 370's, governor spring kit, This is a good time for this question TIMING I've heard different everywhere Dave Mitchell was wanting to set me at 18. 5 and the boys from JVD said around 19. 5 to 20. 5 but it's a little hard to start up that high??

Yeow. I'd set timing to 16 deg, not 18-20. Too much makes the engine unhappy at normal driving rpm range.
You can email me for details and possible sources of delivery valves, etc. The installation isn't bad--look up timing setting in the manual--you remove #1 delivery valve to do so.
So far no one who has gotten 370s from me would put the old injectors back in. Even if they end up needing more clutch, etc.

You can add a BIG ! on what Joe said about the 370s. I got a set from him and would say the increase in performance is just as much as putting in a fuel plate. It really improved the performance thru out the whole rpm range. BTW Joe, what would you estimate the hp/torque of my engine, rear wheel, now? Do you think the trans will hold up OK if I just roll on the throttle? What about power brake launches? John P has basically the same setup as me and his truck dyno'd at 381hp and 1036lbs torque. Just was wondering what your experience has been with my set up. I know different dynos will register a wide variety of readings with the same vehicle. Also thank you for all the help and advice you have given me.

Koa Man, I expect your Ram is in the 370-380 hp range also. We dyno'ed a 175 hp Ram with a similar setup at 372 on the Dynojet, so this range of hp is apparently common for a 175-180 hp Ram with a strong plate and 370s (at least the ones I use--there are others that may not work as well). Yep, I agree, those injectors make a major hp difference and add a tremendous amount of mid-range torque too.

I thought those degee settings for the timing where way advanced too but that is what their doing, you also have to realize is Dave Mitchell is also running a diesel repair shop!! Well the 370's are what I need and probably a gov. spring kit too. It seems to be working very well and everybody that has replied is very happy with their setup and they should be. Joe Do you sell the 370's if so what kind are they and how much??
Thanks for all the help

Koa Man:

If your truck doesn't dyno out AT
LEAST at what mine did (381 H. P/
1069 Torque) I will be very
surprised!

SmokinCummins:

You will NOT be disappointed with
the 370'S! As Joe Donnelly told you,
"So far no one who has gotten 370's
from him would put the old injectors
back in. " Just FYI the timing on my
truck is set right at "16. "

Good luck with the modifications.
