I am in the decision making process of what to buy for towing a 12-14,000# 5th wheel with a one ton, but don't know which gear ratio etc, to go with. I currently own a 98 2500 with 3. 54,s and a 5 speed, but have read that the transmission has a problem with 5th gear when worked hard around 1700 rpm (55-58 mph) which is probably the speed at which I would be towing. I want to buy a 1994 to 1998 1 ton with 5 speed, but am concerned about transmission problems. What years did this transmission problem apply to? Would I be better off with 4. 10's in back and run the engine a little higher, or go with 3. 54's and run in 4th gear while towing? I've enjoyed the TDR for a couple of years, and am sure that this has probably been covered, but I don't get to read it cover to cover. This is my first time in a "forum" so haven't got the "smilies" figured out yet. I've got a good sense of humor, so don't worry about thrashing me to bad! Also, were there certain years of trucks 1994 to 1998 that were better than others? Any help would be appreciated. Thanx!
