Where to go in early October

I am in the decision making process of what to buy for towing a 12-14,000# 5th wheel with a one ton, but don't know which gear ratio etc, to go with. I currently own a 98 2500 with 3. 54,s and a 5 speed, but have read that the transmission has a problem with 5th gear when worked hard around 1700 rpm (55-58 mph) which is probably the speed at which I would be towing. I want to buy a 1994 to 1998 1 ton with 5 speed, but am concerned about transmission problems. What years did this transmission problem apply to? Would I be better off with 4. 10's in back and run the engine a little higher, or go with 3. 54's and run in 4th gear while towing? I've enjoyed the TDR for a couple of years, and am sure that this has probably been covered, but I don't get to read it cover to cover. This is my first time in a "forum" so haven't got the "smilies" figured out yet. I've got a good sense of humor, so don't worry about thrashing me to bad! Also, were there certain years of trucks 1994 to 1998 that were better than others? Any help would be appreciated. Thanx!

Given the weight of your trailer and typical towing speed I would go for the five speed and the 4. 10 axle. And you are definitely in one ton territory. I had a 97 2500 with the 4. 10 and found that it was a good setup even if the truck was a tad light for my trailer. I didn't have a problem with the nut but if you are concerned, have the nut replaced when you buy it. It is a small price to pay for piece of mind. Good luck with your search. These views and opinions are mine and are probably not shared by the other folks on this planet. :D :D

We're towing a 13,500 lb 5ver that puts us at 21,180 GCW. The package I ordered (see signature) was specifically selected because of its 21,500 GCWR.

Get the GVWR and GCWR information on the trucks you're considering (i. e. , both axle ratios) and see which fits the size of 5ver you're looking at. To be safe, assume that the 5ver's GVWR is going to be its actual weight by the time you fill it with accessories, options and "stuff". For GVWR/pin weight calculations, figure that about 20% of the 5ver's GVWR will be carried by the truck as pin weight. I suspect you'll need the 4. 10 to even get close to the GCWR you need.

The 4. 10 is a great axle ratio for towing heavy like we do. With our 235/85R-16E tires, we're turning about 2350 RPM @ 70 MPH - perfect for pulling the grades on the Interstate in 6th gear. :) It sounds a little busy running empty at the same speed, but I didn't buy ours to run empty.

But then again, all the above applies to the 24V.

Good luck and enjoy!!
