Replacing Ignition Switch....

Okay, so I'm in the market for a "new" truck, and I found this one the other day. It's basically everything I want, except for the price  I KBB'd it, with about $8000 listed as a private party sale, and I think it's maybe got another couple thousand into it, not counting the switch from an automatic to manual transmission. I think maybe $10,000 would be a healthy offer. Can you guys take a look at the description and pics and tell me what you think?

TIA

Scott

Oh, and if ANY of you show up here with it, I'll be mad (kidding ;) )

It's an Autotrader link so it's about a mile long

I think his asking price is way too high, but your price might be a little low. The low mileage and nice condition are worth quite a bit, but still nowhere near what he wants. I'd say around $12k-$13k would be a fair number, maybe even a little more.

It's similar to my '92 W350, except mine has the auto transmission and had about 100k more miles when I bought it two years ago. I paid $8k (owner was asking $10k).

Wow, that is tough. It sure is sharp. :)

For that price, even with the low miles, it's an awful lot. Looks like he wants to regain ALL the money he has in the truck from the conversions/parts/work he has done..... What he is asking was probably what it cost new.

I don't think 15k would be unrealalistic. Going price (asking price, anyways) for clean/low mile 1st. gens trucks around here (when you can find one) is in the neighborhood of $8-13k. Dealer or private party.

What 5spd was swapped in, NV or Getrag?

The 93 W350 CC, I had, was a middle of the road optioned pickup, listed for $21700 or so NEW. I think he is about $11K too high. Low miles arent any great advantage on a vehicle that old; it could have gone a year or two between oil changes. I'll guaratnee you the brakes will need work. I could go on. If I'm gonna spend $20K on a pickup, it better have a Dana 80 and a P7100 pump, preferrably a 913 (used in the 215hp engines), new EGR brakes, good hydraulics in brake system, new 19. 5 tires, etc, etc.

I'd start at $9500 and work up to about $11K. It's still a 10+year old truck. If he wont come down to at least $12K, he is in no hurry to sell it.

Way too much $$ IMO.

Especially if its a vehicle that's from the north where they use salt on the roads... . there's no escape... like Niel Young said... "rust never sleeps".

I think he's high -- maybe on more than the price!! I'd probably go up to 14-15k for something that nice. Around here, good 1st gens are really tough to find, so a sharp stocker W350 might go anywhere from 9-12k.

I'd say he's definitely using the old "add all receipts for truck improvements to sales price" formula.

Good Luck!

Dave

I would be concerned with the mainenance on the truck. With it supposedly having 40k on it.

Why has the brakes been done just recently?

What size are those tires. They are not 235's from the look of them. I think they put 215's on it.

Why are the rear center markers not the same color. "To cheap to buy the correct ones" DOT will pull you over on those.

Why were the buckets pulled out? They ride better than the seat setup that he installed. The back seat he installed is useless. It would be hard for even a small child to get back there.

I would look at some of the other cheezy items installed. Why the low rent hardware store grab handles? Why the second set also. These are holes that would need pluged.

Air horns or the roof. Get real. TACKY More holes to fill.

Mirrors on the front bumper. TACKY

That set of stacks. :-laf :-laf

Now for the biggest item I see. Look real close at the pic's of that bed. Why is the rear corners of the bed lower than the front corners? Something isn't right there. If you notice the rear bumper has the correct positioning from the bed. But both side pic's show the rear corners look lower for some reason. I would request better side pic's of that truck.

Myself I wouldn't off more than 10k. All the repairs he listed are normal maint in my book. Why pay him for all the repairs/upgrades that were done. If you could call some of them upgrades. :-laf :-laf

I don't remember ever seeing any 1st gen for sale with only 40k. My guess was around 15K. I don't think that he is very serious about selling it if he stays over 20K. IMHO. It looks like a very nice truck.

Prices

22,500 is a keeper price. I bought a 93 CTD a year ago that is clean as can be. Running boards, chrome covers, tailgate works, OD works. Even the TPS works!!! Had 68k (I believe accurate) on the mileage. Runs STRONG. I paid 9500. Drove it 10k miles in the next 17 days. It now has 90k and I would not take what I paid but I know it wouldn't bring 20k.

Just bought an 89 CTD with 165k for 3000. Needs minor work. I know of an 89 CTD that sold for 1800. Real bad paint. Real good truck.

Bought a FWD Ramcharger (blood brother to the CTD first gens) for 700.

My opinion, a CTD truck in the 4 to 5k range that is clean and all works is a good buy. 1 to 2k, buy it for spare parts.

The 800k later model CTDs are putting lots of pressure on truck prices.

Now the first gens aren't sitting around everywhere but they can be bought a lot cheaper than 22. 5k. Don't get carried away with low miles or perfect paint.

Maybe he used the wrong picture. He called it a 3500 and the ad says four door.

Keep looking.

Wow, that was more than I was EVER expecting to hear about this one :D Thanks a lot, guys, you've really come through with this one :)

I agree that he's probably high on more than just his price, and yes, he's probably trying the "add up the reciepts" trick, and the salt is another thing I'd worry about. I'm not sure which transmission it is, but I'd "hope" it's the NV.

Yes, the mirrors are tacks, but I like the horns  I'm going to ask what size tires are on it, too, as they do look a little small, now that I see them again.

As for the bed, I'm not sure what you're seeing, Philip. Maybe I missed something in the pics? Could you expand more, please?

Let's see, what else... oh yeah, the second set of grab handles - they're so you can hold on as you burn yourself on the stacks while looking in the bed  :D

James - I don't think Autotrader lets you list a truck like that any other way any more, they are all "3500" and anything that is ex-cab is called a 4-door, for some stupid reason.

I'll definately be armed with this thread if I go look at it, which I might do this coming weekend.

Thanks again, guys, you've really helped me a lot!

Look real close at the left side pic of the truck. Behind the wheel well the bed and body line drops down. It does not look straight. The right pic of the bed corner doesn't show it as good as the left side. But I think both sides are down. The rear corners should be level with the front corners.

With the bumper being in the correct position. I would suspect a bent frame behind the rear axle. If the bumper was showing higher mounted than stock to the bed line. I would think it is broken bed mountings.

That is why I would want better pic's to see if it is more pronounced with a straight on side pic.

Well for one you sure CAN'T trust the odometers on these trucks, you either can unhook the speedo cable or sensor and run for miles and never register any on the odometer. You can swap a new or used lower mileage odometer in it in no time. That being said as Philip pointed out for such a low mileage truck why so much maintainence? At 22. 5 he obviously doesnt want to sell it. If one could look over the truck with a fine toothed comb and it did indicate a 40K mile truck then more in the neighborhood of $15k. He must definately be a truck driver with all the cheesy mods. I would have like to seen 5" stacks not 4", and I like the air horns, hopefully they work and not for show, the sissy bars on the front hood with mirrors on them dont care for them. Overall looks pretty nice. Bill

Even if the truck is that low of miles it still shouldnt be around 15k IMHO.

I bought both of my trucks that are really clean no oil leaks all maint done on them (with records) for 7k and 8k respectivly. I paid 8k for my wife's silver truck as it has a nice topper on it to match the truck w/ a carpet kit in the back.

As said there is really no way to prove the truck has that low of miles on it. Letting them sit is almost as hard as driving them alot.

I would say 10k no more.

Philip - thanks, I do see what you mean. I think it might be an optical illusion making a small defect look huge, but I'll probably go look at it this weekend, even if just for the fun of it.

I was wondering about the odometer reading and maintenance, too, so I'll definately be "going over it with a fine toothed comb. " ;) I figure I should treat this truck as if it could have 140,000 or maybe even 200,000 miles on it. Does that sound a little better? It seems to be the average for our trucks, of course mine is nearing 300K  ;) Oo.

I sort of wonder if he entered the wrong price when he posted it? Either that or he's high ;) I'll be sure to keep this updated as time goes.

Let me clarify that :)

It looks to me like the front of the truck sits lower than the back of the cab, and the front of the bed sits higher than the back of the bed. This would say to me that the frame may be tweaked up in the center, making it look like only the back of the bed is lower. It's just hard to tell.

But you noticed what I was talking about. It might be camera angle or something else. But it is something you know to look at and check. That is the main thing.

That truck is seting to level. In stock form it should be about 6" higher in the rear. So see if the 6" block is still under the rearend. If they aren't then the rear end will sag with a load. It takes 6k to set my truck level. :( So think of the ride I have.

Sitting high - yeah, I know exactly what you mean by that. My truck came with extra springs in the rear, so it takes about 2,000lbs. back there to get it to squat to almost level (not that's I've tried putting that much gravel in there or anything :) ) Normally, it sits so high that you could take the wheel-wells out and put flat steel over the holes and it woudn't affect a thing :-laf
