Where I work, everybody in the field has to have a CDL. It’s very rare we hire someone under 21. I’m not sure how new this disaster is or if it’s in all states, but there are now different CDL tests to achieve the same outcome, a CDL. What I mean is, three people go in at the same time all to get a class A CDL. It’s now like a lottery system. One guy will have to do the air brake test, the other two won’t. One guy will have to back thru cones to a dock, the other two won’t. And so on... I can not see how this is a good idea.

funny stuff, but most of the changes in testing were to stamp out the CDL license mills. 2 of my co workers are State Certified 3rd Party examiner... I also fill in as a CDL Trainer but I don't do the legal stuff like my co worker does.

anyway, to make a short story of it, nowadays you have to schedule the prospective license holder for his Pre Trip exam, and the State will inform the examiner which portions of the Pre Trip they will take... then you have to schedule the guy for the parking lot skills test and for all practical purposes they will also inform the examiner which three lot skills test to give to the prospect.. the road test hasn't changed.

it now takes 2 separate days of testing to do all of this, and no person who trains the driver can give the driver all three of the tests, so it takes one trainer plus at least one certified examiner and in many cases 2 different examiners to do all three phases of testing.... hence I ended up doing some of the training at my job, because of the way the state wants it done. I think we were just informed we now have a time limit onf the Pre Trip Inspection portion of the exam. I believe they only get 45 minutes now, previously it was open ended and you could be out there for hours while some nitwit named off every friggin thing on the vehicle.. I'm glad my butt only has 13 more months left at my job.

I think the Alley Docking is always on the Parking lot skills test, but which of the five other lot skills test the licensee will receive varies depending on what the state requires.. that is why some people nly do a partial pre trip and others do the whole thing..
