some info on the lift pump

As i said in another thread my lift pump failed on my 2001. i finally found a dealer that was open this morning about 2 hours from my house and took them the pump and they replaced it for me. now to the point. . as i was waiting for the dealers to open i took my pump apart and found that the screen in it was complety pluged with plastic shavings i assume from the fuel tank. i also read on another thread that there is not a check valve in the pump. well there is and my little ball was stuck in about the 1\2 way postion due to all the shavings that were getting under the ball. if this is old info im sorry, but there is so much on the lift pump its hard to tell what all has been said.

Good post... might be why some pumps seem to fail very early. It's called foreign material exclusion and it should be a priority at the factory. Apparently it's not.

I've seen pics posted of the 2001's that has a filter at the end of the tube in the bottom of the tank. This ought to keep the tank plastic chips out of the lift pump.

So how did the lift pump above get full of plastic?
No in tank filter?

wondering if your old one was bad or if it were cleaned to remove the restriction would if work again. Could it be that the chips created the low pressure reading.

Deezul Doug is right---if the 2001 tank module is anything like the 1999 it'd be impossible for shavings to get in the fuel line unless there was a hole in the screen of the filter at the bottom of the tank module--or your supply line is loose in the module---or no filter---now that doesn't mean that there weren't shavings in the filter itself prior to assembly---chris

interesting finding , not surprised , but yes there is a fine mesh filter in the end of the fuel pickup , curious how anything would get past it ..... maybe the dealer should be dropping your tank for a look .

where is this check ball you speak of ?

My tank does have a screen on the pickup. as far as the checkball it is in the pump. the same 3 studs that hold the pump to the mounting bracket hold the pump together. if you take them out the top lifts off and there is a rubber diaphram a check ball to prevent flow back and also the vain pump. i did try mine after i cleaned it and yes it did work fine. and it does pump alot i used a gallon jug on the bench and it only took a short time to empty it.

I removed the cover from my old lift pump (approximately 144,000 miles on original pump) and there is no check ball. I removed the screen which had a big gouged out hole in it. There was also a big hole in the wall between where the pump vanes are located and the area (channel) where the screen is located. The hole was about 1/4" round and the edges were were broken and made the screen difficult to remove. I had metal pieces in my fuel filter which I knew were from the lift pump. Maybe the remainder of the check ball and the blown out hole in the vain wall? Not knowing what a good pump looks like inside, mine appears to be beyond repair?

the checkball is on the inlet side if you look from the inside it lays down in the bottom with the banjo bolt sreewed in tight it would almost touch it.

brian , i have my new replaced lift pump out , and had it apart , i don't remember seeing a check ball , neither did the carter HP replacement , i have 2 of those , but i'll take them apart again and look , also i got the rebuild kit from carter , will look for a check ball in its contents .
