I swear there are some people out there that I wonder about how they even get by day to day.

Didn't know where else to post this, but thought this was a good place. So I am getting home from work yesterday to have the wife tell me that I got a letter from some South Coast Air Quality Management district that someone had written in to them, anonomously of course , that my truck was blowing excessive smoke. Now my truck only blows serious black smoke if I stomp on it from the get-go or have to accelerate onto the highway. Thing that caught my attention was that it is in a place that I am randomly at only once a week at the time of day(lunch time) that it was supposedly reported. I guess the idiot had so much time on there hands that they wrote my license plate down and sent it in, thinking that this stupid air resource board is going to do something about it. Well, there is nothing they can do and where I live I am not even emitting 1/1,000,000th of the amount of crap tht the people down here in southern California emit everyday. 18 wheelers emit way more smoke than I do and they are driving constantly up and down the state.

Anyway, this really just ****** me off and I can't believe that there are idiot tree huggers out there that probably just drive up and down the road looking for this kind of thing or any trouble they can stir up. It a friggin' diesel for pete's sake and all diesels emit smoke, some more than others, but that is just a fact of the design of the diesel engine, something everyone should be aware of. I wrote back to this board in the comment section of the return letter, saying that #1 diesels emit smoke and it is a fact. #2 I mentioned the 18 wheeler big rigs and buses that i see everyday emitting 10 times the amount of smoke that my truck does plus they are on the road 10 times more than me and #3 do not send me another notice such as this as it is a waste of their time as well as mine and nothing can be done about it and if they want to send this letter to someone it should be every car owner in southern Cali as we are probably the most poluting state in the nation right now.

Well, just had to get that off my chest and hope you guys feel the same. I just hate this, cuz I am not one to just tune my engine to blow all the smoke it can and smoke everyone on the road out everyday. This is just stupid that my truck was picked out of all the others on the road, to be the one who gets the letter and is now on the Air resources board hit list. I think I am gonna start anonomously reporting all the big rigs, buses and cars that I see emitting any smoke whether it is natural for the engine to do, like our diesels, or whether they are just burning oil or something.

That sucks! Do they want you to respond to the letter or have your truck tested???? It wouldnt take much time to fix your truck so that a snail could out run it and you couldnt get it to smoke. . But thats not the issue. . its having to do it. .

Rick

No, I don't have to have it tested. There are no smog laws in effect for diesels anyway out here, they are exempt from smog tests. I know there are other tests but they can do nothing, cuz they have no evidence that I am a gross polluter other than the stupid person who reported me. All they asked was like if the engine had any problems, if it runs rich, etc. It seemed like the questions pertained to a terrible running gasser. I'm not going to worry about it and if the time comes that they require a test, I can de-smoke my engine so much in about 5 minutes that they will think the truck is a loud clackety gasser engine. It just pisses me off that someone, has a pen ready on their console for anything that they think needs to be corrected. Just like the post in the Competition forum about the offensive dragster pics of Scotts girl crew, this is just another stupid a-hole that thinks my truck is offensive and I am a major contributor to So. Cals air quality problems during my probably 30 minutes of vehicle operation each day to and from work. I am gonna be keeping an eye out my rear veiw now for anyone writing my plate down and I am gonna shove that pen up their *****.

Like you said, some people don't have anything better to do.

Unfortunately, as emissions become more of an issue (thanks to the media), you're going to see more of this type of thing.

What really burns me, in our state (and I suspect others are this way), older vehicles are essentially exempt from meeting emission standards at test stations. Yet, other than diesels, these old clunkers emit 100 times the pollutants the newer cars and trucks do. How many old clunkers have you encountered that fog the road, choking on over fueling and oil blowing by bad rings and valve guides, so bad that you can barely breath? And how many late model cars/trucks have you encountered doing the same? 1000 to 1, I'd guess. But only the newer vehicles must be tested and pass.

So, how does that make you feel? :D

Seriously though, I would be mad too. My response likely would have been something like this;

- I have received your letter dated __________. Thank you for your concern. My vehicle is in perfect running order and any visible smoke is a normal occurance in most diesel engines. The complaint recieved was obviously from someone who is not completely familiar with diesel engine operating characteristics. Furthermore, although particulates from diesel exhaust are more visible than the colorless gasses emitted by gasoline powered vehicles, they are less harmful to the environment. I trust that this letter clarifies the matter and it would serve no purpose for me to recieve any further correspondence on this issue.

Thank you,

Yours truly,

yadda yadda yadda.

Hey-

All I can say is welcome to KOMMIEFORNIA!

I can't wait to get on of those letters, but trying to explain yourself in the comment box would be common sense but liberals at the SCAQM don't have that. You cannot educate them, they don't care. When I get mine, in a big RED sharpie, a four letter word followed by YOU will be written in the comment box... . I'm sure you catch my drift... .

erik

Thanks for the replys guys, I am definately with ya on all your examples.

Erik, that is what I wanted to write but since I am now on their hit list, I thought a little disagreeing comment was fine for the first letter, but if I get another I will break out my big red sharpie! :D :-laf Oo.

JGK, there are so many trashed cars out here that drive the freeway and are blowing burning oil smoke out the back it is crazy. I see them all the time around here in So Cal.

Dave, I should have wrote what you stated there, that was perfect! It would have definately told them a thing or two. I guess if I get another letter, I will write your comments and then break out the big red sharpie and do what Erik is going to do the day he gets a letter. :-laf

Forgot to mention.

I met a new smog guy in the area yesterday and talked with him while I was getting a car smogged. He is a test only guy.

He mentioned that in 3-5 years diesels in California were going to be required to be smogged. And not just those smoke tests or the little smogs but full on tests for NOX CO HC and the rest. A buyback program would be incorperated for gross polluters. This is just a rumor so take it for what it is. Do I think it will happen? Yes, maybe not that soon but one day it will. When that happens its either time to turn liberal or move :-laf :( :eek: :{

You must have smoked out some tree hugging, pony tailed, sandal wearing liberal weany driving a 20 y. o. Volvo. Such that it is in beautiful Socialist Republic of Kalifornia.

In Nevada, at least in Reno, we have to be smogged now. Used to be anything diesel over 8800# or something was exempt, including 3/4 tons. They now moved it to anything over 10K. Ching. $36 please. I may see if I can reregister at a higher weight to avoid this. I want to put on a new exhaust w/o cat, but mine has a cat now and I don't know if it would pass visual with no cat. Good luck in Kalifornia. They'll probably make you start running battery powered trucks that can pull 5'ers up to 6 pounds and go 10 miles!

I talked to another Reno local ... he did register to get over the weight. It costed about 2x the smog check. :(

As for the cat ... i've got one too ... well, it's an empty cat. :-laf I took it off yrs ago. With the smog ck change, I stood it on end & grabbed a long bar & hammered until it was empty. Took it down & paid $40, no receipt, cash to put it back on. I had them mod it so that it would accept 4" too. Looks fine, passed the test. Yep ... they ck for it.

Joe,

I knew there are no smog laws for our trucks now... but could they ask for a snap throttle test like they do the big rigs???

Rick

Up in Northern California, the part north of Sacramento, most counties don't even require the bi-annual smog checks. The only time they require the smog check is when the vehicle is transferred. You should see all the crap they have driving down the roads in Yreka, spewing out a wide variety of colors of smoke. I'd much rather be fogged out with diesel exhaust than to get stuck behind any of those piles. A good majority of the junk is driven by tree-hugging hipocrites who have nothing better to do than to tell you and I that we are messing up their world.

Rick

I hope not Rick, cuz mine blows a freight train of smoke when I snap the throttle.

Hey Joe, You gonna PM and tell me where this "incident" occurred? I wanna nasty gram too... ... . Ryan

I am sure it will happen just about anywhere if you get in front of the right person and stomp on the throttle.

But my incident was listed as during my lunch hour where I work in the Valencia Industrial Center and it happened supposedly on the intersection of Rye Canyon Rd. and the Old Road. Apparently it is someone who has seen my truck before and probably followed me to get the license plate and was real sneaky about it. But just like I said before, if I catch someone taking my license plate down I am gonna toss the beat down. :D

Still is fun to get a tailgater behind you and mash the throttle and watch them swerve like the smoke is gonna take out the windsheild or something. :-laf

Thats a great idea Forrest! I still have my cat that came with the truck so I am gonna go hog it all out to and if the time comes to have a cat again, then I guess I'll throw it on and with it hogged out it should make no difference in sound or power.

I got one of those letters from the Texas air NAZI's. It had some helpful hints to make it run cleaner like "Change your sparkplugs. "

Happily, it had a return stamp for you to fill out a survey/comments section. Mine was in red Sharpie and relatively profanity free!
