I was having problems with the truck running rough in Park. I had this same problem 35K ago, dealer replaced all 6 injectors. I never knew which ones were bad. Upon removing the injectors we noticed that the #1 and #6 injector had a fair about of Sooty on them. The others looked pretty good. I have been using Diesel Kleen for some time now and would have thought this would not happen. I was wondering if lack of use would have something to do with this problem. Last year we only drove 4,600 miles and this year so far only about 2,500 miles. I have been using a Edge EZ Tow, but it has always been set a the lowest setting

(40hp/100tg). I could see this being an issue if I were running the Edge at the higher rates. What is your take on this problem folks?
 
I don't know wht the dealer used--probably rebuilt units based on the old Bosch design. I'd get a new set of the latest Bosch upgraded to Stage 1 from Dynomite, and stop using the EZ box.

I would think that the dealer used whatever was available at the time, they were changed under warranty. I am getting the replacement injectors from Southwest Diesel. By your comment about the Edge EZ box, you thinking that it is causing the problem? My only concern would be that I used the EZ since truck was about a year old with no problems until I it hit 105,000 miles. And as I said it is at the lowest setting.
 
Yeah, if you don't run them hard they will soot. May or may not be from that. Since you had dealer replace them and the dealer stock is highly suspect you could also have 2 injectors on the border line of bad. l

When we did the isolation check the #6 injector was showing up as bad. After seeing the carbon on that injector I believe that is the case, as well as the #1. I really need to use the truck more, but since selling our fifth-wheel it just doesn't get used much. We have Toyota Prius that we use for obvious reasons. We are planning to go to Texas and Missouri next week and take the truck. I have been looking at a Slide-In-Camper so that we have a good reason to use the truck. :)
 
If the injectors are dribbling then they will soot more no doubt. What tests did you run to determine they were bad?

Hooked up a scanner, and disabled the injector. If the engine ran rough injector was good, if idle did not change we knew the injector was bad. Or at least assumed it was bad. It was decided to remove all of the injectors and send them to Southwest Diesel for testing. Oil analysis done by Blackstone did not show any fuel in the oil. Wear has been better then average for miles on the truck.
 
Only 35k on the injectors and wear better than average? Or are you referring to some thing else?

Would have been interesting to see the cylinder contribution percentages on them for comparison but too late now. :) Would be interesting to see that after they are fixed\replaced also.
 
You have to be careful when not using the factory scan tools and you "disable" an injector. When the cylinder dies the engine controller will ramp up the others to keep the idle speed at desired RPM. So in essence the engine controller masks the dead cylinder.

After Southwest Diesel tested the injectors, they found (3) that failed. We reinstalled the new ones on the back (3) cylinders. I am still getting some rough idle at times in Park, but I suppose that is from some air in the fuel. We adjusted the Intake Valves since were doing the Exhaust Valves. It does seem to run better and it is little quieter. Taking a long trip tomorrow, we will see how she does. :cool:

The HPCR system self bleeds any air out of the system when you crank it. If you had air in the low pressure system feeding the CP-3 it would not even start. Now you need to go back and run a cylinder contribution test to see if the 3 you did not replace are unbalanced from the rest, if you had 3 bad it is a good bet the others are not far behind. It is a bit dangerous to replace only some injectors on these systems, there is a good chance the others end up having problems sooner than later. Watch it close for any sign of hazing or EGT's that look even slightly high.
