I had a base model 14" South Bend clutch installed in my truck in 2010 at 107,000 miles. Today it started to go out at 129,000 miles. I am a conservative driver in a basically stock truck and the driving has been mixed highway and city.
I do not hold the pedal in at stop lights nor do I tow or haul regularly.
This seems like a pretty short lifespan on what is billed to be a very nice clutch.
Has anyone else experienced something like this?
Am I doing something wrong? I've driven manual transmission vehicles for the last 20 years or so and have never thought I was doing it wrong.
I live in a tiny coastal town now and I tracked down whom I believe to be a very good mechanic. He suggested we install a NAPA clutch (about the same price as the SB at $425 or so) as it is readily available. Ordering a SB would take a few days and he is willing to squeeze me in tomorrow, and with the mileage I got out of the last one, I'm kind of soured for now. He is going to investigate the rear main seal while he's in there, anything else?
I have spent loads of money on this truck and it seems to never end. I'm just here to vent.
