Hey everybody, I got a question, I work a dealer in NW AR and we installed a southbend clutch for a customer, now the customer is convinced his transmission is goint out, there is a rattling noise coming from the transmission after you press in the pedal the noise goes away, The vehicle is an 07 3500 Mega with a g56, Oh and cudos to the southbend folks they have been very helpful we have done a couple this is the first that rattles. Oh and if you are in NW AR and need a friendly dealer drop me a pm:cool:

Shouldn't have anything to do with the transmission. Sounds like one of the two bearings got damaged when installing the SB clutch.

Interesting I talked to Southbend, they said the noise was normal in the g56 due to the wait of the fluid in it. I am trying to convince the customer that it is ok.

We offer some HD clutches that have a different set of springs in the disc... . these heavier set of springs won't dampen some of the torsional vibrations that the stock disc takes care of... . so at idle sitting with the pedal out there is some disc and input shaft noise... . as soon as the pedal is pressed and the clutch dis-engages and the input shaft stops, the noise stops... . as the disc and input shaft have stopped turning.....

I don't think any of us have the money to fund the research to stop this torsional vibration... we sell the clutch telling the customer he's going to have to live with it... . we have one of our trucks set up with this set up... take it for a drive and see what you think... . but it solves some of the problems with increased HP... .

Hope this helps. .

BTW - I'm told by an engineer that this torsional vibration is something to do with harmonics caused by the engine..... but shows up in the disc... We see the same thing on some class 5 -8 clutches with certain Eaton Transmissions.
