Spare tire mount options????

I am looking for a nice method of mounting a s[are in the bed of my truck. The 295 is to big underneath. I don't want to has one flying around the bed and potentially through the back of my head in an accident.



i would love to see any options people have come up with. Pictures would be great or links. I would not like to take up to much bed space and want it to be pretty durable.

Sticks, I am not dead set on anything. I was thinking about upright at the front of the bed either against the cab or along the side of the bed. i know there are a number of mount that put a tire "pre-runner" style in the middle of the bed but i don't want to loose that much bed real estate.

You and I have the same problem.

I've been looking into the same thing and the only option I've been able to come up with is this;

Bonarue II spare tire carrier.



Seems like it may work well.



I haven't set my heart on it though but it looks like a good option.

My option 2 is to ask Layne at Denver offroad to build me a rear bumper with a swing out carrier but that is a Very expensive option.

Hey Kevin,

Layne is a little more coin than i am interested in putting into this. Can't you have someone local fab up a carrier off the reunel rear bumper?? That is a bomber rear bumper and should support anything you bolt or weld to it.



I want to keep it within the boundries of the truck so i think the mounts athompson links will work pretty well.





Anyone else have any ideas??

I actually have the Fleetside Mount that aThompson posted. It worked for my Old ford when I mounted the spare. It does not work for my Dodge because it's designed for mounting along the side of the bed and my tire is too big too mount there. It may work on a Long bed though.



PM me If you wan't to try that mount. I'll send it out so you don't have to waste the coin to get it.



I may get that All truck mount so I can mount it too the far wall of the bed.

I-bolts

We just went a 4k trip with plenty of offroading and wash board dirt roads. I used heavy open end I bolts and bolted my 35" tire to the side of the bed just behind driver side. Just hooked the bolt under the lip and ran it through the lug holes in the wheel, then bolted it down with a nut and jam nut. Locked it down with a chain to the tie down in the bed. Not once did I have to tighten it. I don't carry my tire all the time but this worked out fine, did not move rattle or come loose. Any way good luck.....

What is an I-bolt? i am seeing the idea but not exactly the bolts you are using.





Kevin the tire does fit in a long bed I tried it this afternoon. I also tried to put the most worn one I have under the bed and it was a no go.

I bolt

Well in some places I'm sure it has different names, but what I mean is the bolt with an eye on one end. Normally use lets say on a trailer for tie downs, or bolted through wood for and anchor point for cable's etc etc. I just bought the largest one that would fit through the lug holes on the wheel and split the eye open enough to hook under the lip of the bed. I can send you some pics if you want?? Send me a PM if interested. Cost was about $4. 00 bones.

Not sure about what was meant on long beds but there is no way mine will fit underneath but it will fit upright behind the cab, I think that is where they referred to.

Dang man! That bumper pic that was posted by Thomas, is an awesome looking bumper, definitely something that I'd be intersted in purchasing. Now why can't someone get the deminsion off of that bumper and fabricate their own, or take it to a welding shop or something like that? Just a thought. I have been looking for a bumper that I like for quite a while now, a bumper that doesn't cost an arm and a leg, maybe just a arm.

Hey, Thomas, do you have anymore pics of that rear bumper, I might have a connection to a welder that could do something like that for me, or us, if someone else wants one.

Andy Perreault is a longtime TDR member. The picture (an old one) shows the Rickard bumper on Andy's truck. I don't know if he still has that truck. There are three photos (that I'm aware of) on this board that have views of the bumper:

Go to your local community college, find their metal shop instructor, and ask them if they have a student in need of a project.

As per mediccummin I rigged this up at homedepot in about five minutes today. Works great. I may look for a more perminant mount option over the winter and a locking system but this is quick, easy and cheap. Thanks for the help.

Hope it works out ok for you. Like I said I have had good luck so far. When mine is back there I also have put a heavy cable lock through it and to the bed tie down so someone will have to do a little work to steal it. Later

i have been getting a lot of I TRIED TO BY-PASS THE CUSSING FILTER from friends for not having cleaned the tire before mounting it



I think short bed answer is against the front of the bed behind the driver. I thought up a system that would work for a permanent mount either on the side or front of the bed. Just use some flat stock as backing and drill for two pieces of heavy threaded rod. Sandwich the stock behind the bed with locktited lock nuts and fender washers on the inside of the bed. You would end up with two studs in the location you want and it could be removed with relatively little effort. This set up I have right now is ready temporary but works like a charm. If I like the location i will probably put a permanent mount in the same location. It would be stronger.

I now have three full size spare tires I should just bolt them up for fun. i have 65k on the truck and one flat that took a 30mph ditch to knock it off the rim. I guess i am just a pessimist carrying a spare around town anyway.
