Not really - the voltage required for the spark to jump the gap at the plug remains the same. The ignition system just has to build a higher voltage upstream of the 5K boot than it would a 0K boot. The 5K boot serves to limit current through the spark plug (extending electrode life) and, by limiting current, also suppresses radio frequency interference (RFI). For more info, see HERE.

Don't go re-engineering stuff the Japs have nearly perfected. Leave that resistor cap right where it is.........you can actually cause RFI problems by running incorrect ignition components on certain engines.

Bummer that you couldn't pin point what you fixed...........I hate not knowing the real culprit!

That does help, thanks. I don't know why they can't just put a little arrow on the thing. Or make it so the switch will only turn to 3 positions. Mine will spin 360 degrees
