I saw something about an injector tube puller. Is this needed for sure or can something else be used,as I don't have said puller. Thanks...

One of the bolts from the intake horn works great. Just thread it down into the top of the injector and pull up. If the injector is a little on the tough side use a prybar under the bolt head to help pop it out.

I just did an injector swap a while back. Here are the "special tools" that I feel are neccessary:

1. Bent long needle nose pliers for extracting old injectors and installing new ones

2. 19mm crows foot wrench

3. inch pounds tourqe wrench (89 in lbs)

4. ft lbs torque wrench capable of 28 ft lbs with a flexible head

I tried doing the install without the crows foot and flexible head torque wrench and had issues later with the injectors running rough. That 28 ft lbs is critical on the injector line bolts.

good luck!!

Thanks fellas,I'll get right to it. Any time I hear "special tool" I flinch. Then it usually isn't absolutely necessary anyway, but maybe nice to have.

Thanks Phil, luckily I have access to the tools mentioned,I certainly don't need to screw something up. The help is appreciated!

I'm going to be doing a swap to DD2's on my 02 HO within a week and was looking for the factory torque specs for the nozzle hold down, line nut,& valve cover ,if theres any thing I'm forgetting let me know. any help appreciated. thanks,Luke

Got it... so 5 LB FT is 60 " LB... wasn't sure if i was "allowed" to do the conversion.

Injector #1-4 (or is that #2-6?) are done... the easy front ones. Not excited to do the rear two. Anyone have a monkey or small child I could throw back there???

Here's a couple pics:

Check out that nasty crud on my old injectors... Can't be good!!! Is that normal?

DSCN398 shows how you can easily line the injectors up with the numbers. The numbers should read from passenger side to drivers side and the slot in the injector should line up pretty closely with the 1 retainer bolt and the 1 retainer hole. I found that I could NOT press the injectors down with my hands. I used the bent pliers and pried down using the retainer bolt as a pry point. I was able to easily get the first injector tube out to clean it. There was not much crud on it and since the other ones are a lot more difficult, I probably will not clean them.

I noticed DD's instructions don't say anything about the torque on the drivers side 19MM high pressure line nuts... or maybe I'm just blind. FSM seems to say 28 LB FT for these. Thanks for the help. Psyched to try these out!!!

Injector change suggestion

Changed injectors yesterday. Used instructions from Diesel Dynamics.

Suggest an addition to make access to numbers 5 & 6 high pressure connection to tubes easier. Removing plate directly above the fuel filter that is used for mount wiring connectors makes seeing and working in area a lot better. Plate held in place with sheet metal screws.

If I did this again I would like to have a tool for removing the injector tubes. Does anyone know the thread specifications of the injector tubes ?

Appreciate any input.
