Speedometer Calibrator??

So a question to those who may know.



I recently changed out my stock tires (265/70/R17) and went with slightly larger ones (285/75/R17) to give me the look that I wanted. I mounted the new tires on the stock wheels though. I also lifted the front end by adding a 2 inch leveling kit. I know that changing tire sizes affects the speedo and "may" also keep the transmission from shifting correctly.



I am going to get my speedo recalibrated but I was wondering if I "should" do it myself, or have the dealer do it. I have never done this ... at all, but I have heard and read that it is easy. I called the service tech at my dealership and was told that depending on whether or not their computer finds my exact tire size, they may be able to do it for around $90 bucks. I found this speedo calibrator that is specific for my year Ram that goes for $200 bucks.



My question is, has anyone ever used this product, would you use it, is it easy/simple to use, or should I just go to the dealer? I've added a few pic's showing the product and speedo calibration sheet showing the difference with my tire size change.

I purchased one and recently changed my speedometer. Works just fine. Takes about 30 sec once you go thru the menu. The dealer I believe can only go as high with 285/70/17 size, in which is 32. 9" -/+. . I have the new Toyo 35" AT2 that are 34. 5"... I set it at 34" even and dead on with a gps.

I had the dealer calibrate mine when I upsized slightly to LT285/70R17 and they charged me just under $27... in Canada. If you're likely to stay with that size of tire then it's really a one time change and spending $200 on that device might not be worth it for 1 use. However if as jmill says your tire size may not be available in the dealers selection of sizes on their system then you may have to go that route.

Appreciate the info. I wasn't sure how complicated it would be and didn't want to mess with the truck's computer myself and risk screwing something it up... . especially since my truck is new and under warranty.
