I'm new at using a computer so please look over my being slow and all the misspelling. I really need some advice to fix my speedometer/odometer on my 90 year 1 ton duelly with 160 hp diesel-all stock. The speedometer works fine but the odometer want work. I had this problem one time before & I bought a used speedometer head at a salvage yard. Everything worked fine for a little while-now I have the same problem again. Does the speedometer and odometer have a seperate wire and ground through the trans. Please help if anyone has had this problem or knows what I can try to fix this nightmare. I depend on the odometer for oil changes and other maintance. THANKS IN ADVANCE: BHerndon

If I'm not mistaken your speedo is old enough to be driven by a cable. The newer trucks 91. 5-93 that are electric driven; experience a problem were a little gear between the speedometer/odometer strips out, you have the same symptoms. There are speedo shops that can replace the gear, do a search on "speedometer" & limit the search to the first gen. forum , you should be able to find the company names.

PS Welcome to the forum! Oo. :)

paychk is correct there is a little gear in your speedo but if its a late 90 it will be electric if you find the little gear i would like to know i also need several

Thanks a lot . I know the speedometer don't have a cable. It is electric with two wires coming off the sender on the transmission. I was chating with edward. tubor and he thinks it may have a little gear anyway. He suggested that I trip the odometer vigousually and it may go back to working. I will try this tomorrow to see if this will work. Will let you all know the outcome.

P S : I forgot to thank you for welcoming me to the forum. I hope I can just learn all of these terms and how to work the computer. BHerndon

I'm having the same problem as B, my odometer stopped working after I took my dash apart to replace some bulbs. I took it apart again, and turned the little blue gear with a small knife, just to see if it jammed. It worked for about . 3 miles, then stopped working again. I haven't tried the vigorous trip reset, but it's worth a shot. If my gear isn't stripped out (which it isn't), then why would it not be working? I tried cleaing everything, all the connections, you name it. Just seems alittle wierd to be a sensor, cause it all stopped when i took my dash apart. . Could I have jared something?

I'm sure it is the interior mechanics of the speedo head that is at fault. If the gear isn't stripped then maybe one on ether side of it has or the support for the gear has warped and pulled away causing loss of contact.

Thanks for the reply and welcome. and letting me and others know the correct years on the speedometers. This helped me and I feel it will probly help some others also-89 back mechancial-90 up electrical. B||Herndon P. S. -----I added you to my buddy list . I hope you don't mind.

I hate your having these problems too-but I'm glad that I'm not the only person with this problem. Maybe between us all we can find the problem and find a cure. BHerndon

Speedometer/Odometer Plrblem Update

Little Gears::::::::: Yes the speedometer/odometer does have a little gear but it is hard to find. You have to disasemble the head. It has two little motord in it. One runs the speedometer and the other runs the odometer and tripometer. Remove the two phillip head screws and remove the motor very slowly. The little gear is on the inside of this little motor. Mine was stripped-several teeth missing. . If anyone knows where I can buy just the little gear-then I would like to have two of them-please let me know. The places I called wanted to sell me the whole head assembly-about $150. 00's. Can't handle many of these. I said I would let everyone know what my findings where. BHerndon  AND  AND :) 1990 1 ton duelly-blacky 160hp diesel with automatic transmission (ALL STOCK) 1999 Red Quad Cab 1 Ton Duelly 235hp diesel with 5 speed trans. 3:54 rear end. ALL STILL COMPLETELY STOCK. LOVE THESE TRUCKS Oo. Oo. Oo. :)

Oh ya... . well... what do you suggest when your speedo reads 80 MPH while you're still in the driveway... huh... gimme a hammer I'll do some blunt force tuning on this bad boy... ;)

pb... .

Mine reads better than 10 mph too fast but the mileage is correct based on mile markers. What causes that? 92 dually... .

Source for that annoying little gear!

I think I may of found a source for that gear, I haven't ordered one from them yet but plan on it. If anyone orders one before me please post their results here; as I know there are a lot of us with this problem.

Thanks ! :) Oo.

That Gear!

Well I went & ordered 2 gears; one for my broke odometer, the other for a spare. Will update this ASAP when I get my gears.

Paychk--I would really like to know where to get the gears. I have two heads that needs them. Please let me know soon as you can. THANKS BHerndon

In my post; right above yours, where it says "That Gear" with the underline... click on it & away you go! :)

PS You may want to open your speedo up and inspect the gears. Behind the little gear is a bigger gear and it is subject to cracking like the little one, I lost a tooth off the big one so the little one did no good.

Speedometer/Odometer Plrblem Update

Thanks for the information. I will check the other gear before I order. Boy-This is a hefty price for such a small piece of plastic-HA-But it will be worth every penny if it fixes the odometer problem. BHerndon  Oo. :)

For the larger gear, check on the page I posted above, it is the one next to the little one. I should have paid more attention when I was looking at them. I'll be ordering the large one next.
