Sport Light Conversion revisited......

Doc, no... there isnt. The problem is NOT candlepower. The problem is beam pattern which can not be corrected. The mirroring system in our stock lights is extremely poor and inefficient, so all the light in the world wont help much.

Wouldn'tchaknowit. I like my truck ALOT and will NEVER get rid of it but... sometimes I wonder which a$$ those engineers heads were up when they designed certain parts of it. (Stupid cupholder also comes to mind. )



So the sport headlight conversion is the best way to go? How about if I just stick a pair of PIAA 90s on my ranchy (raunchy too) bumperguard? Oo. Probably wouldn't cost much more and it'd be a whole lot easier

light wiring

just returned from going to Muncie (what a blast!) then on out to MO for a few days. thanx for the heads up on the wiring kit from Stern. looks like good stuff. guys with 99 and newer trucks, BE AWARE THAT THE DIAGRAM POSTED WON'T WORK ON YOUR TRUCKS WITH SWITCHED GROUND. the diagram is great, and will work with 98 and older trucks, but with 99 and newer, you'll have to "trigger" the relays from the current light wires to terminal 85, rather than ground 85; then run a jumper from 30 over to 86 on the relay. other than that, it is a great diagram, and just like my instructions. i chose not to use a diagram in mine, because of the memory required for an image, and my cheeeeezy 28Kbps internet connection. sending an image takes forever.

HID lighting conversion

Just wondering if anyone has thought about using HID lighting in the sport conversion? I wonder about the beam cut off, since HID is so much brighter it seems like this would be a good choice. I have seen conversions for ford and chevy by I think sylvania, but no they won't make any for us Dodge guy's. Any thoughts on this?

HID rules. I put them in my Sport lights back in March of '01.

Just a thought! I wonder where the Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights will fit into the picture. They seem to have a very high lighting output at a very efficient electrical rate. I saw the LED tail lights on an 18 wheeler trailer recently and they were very bright in the daylight. Perhaps the LED's are the next generation of lights and will replace the HID type.

HID has an excellent power efficiency... 3,200 lumens @ 35W. Halogen is 1,000 lumens @ 45W... Do the math... LED's are great for marker lights and such, but they do not project well. I have a bunch of LED markers on my truck, and they are great. 100,000 hour life!

I finally put this issue to bed. Called Reliable Automotive (that was on the ccard invoice) explained the situation how I had sent it back and could never get to talk to anyone. He said to FAX him the receipt showing that I returned the product and they would credit my acc. . I figure it's about time only took 4 mos.

sport headlight conversion

i've had several members e-mail me and ask for the instructions, recently, after doing a search and finding threads in the archives. thought i'd bring this thread out of mothballs. pretty good discussion on pros and cons and methods. i still have the instructions for both '99 and newer, and '98 and older to wire the sport lights.

some of the instructions i sent out had an error in them. i assume yours didn't. when editing them once, i must have gotten my eyes crossed, and crossed the wiring from the truck end of the OEM wiring for low and high beam. anyone who has a set of my instructions to use should check the hookup from the truck wiring to the relays. this is on the 01 and newer trucks. the red/orange wire is HIGH beam, going to terminal 85 on the high beam relay. the connection from the violet/white wire is LOW BEAM, going to 85 on the low beam relay.

also, be sure to check the relays you buy. the standard bosch relay has 87A as 12v+ with the relay at rest, and 87 12v+ with the relay activated. it will make life easier if you get relays which have both 87 and 87A only "hot" with the relay activated. the Federal Mogul DF005 is a good choice, inexpensive, and durable in my truck.

i have also bypassed the constant hot lug on my high beam relay and have all the high wired to the switched lug.

sport light conversion--Canadian trucks

for those of you with Canadian trucks with OEM DRL, i don't think these instructions will work. IF, however, you want to completely rewire your lights with a different DRL setup (i have this on my USA truck), i can give those instructions to you. if you were to rewire your Canadian truck with these instructions, the best i can tell, from looking at the FSM, the DRL wouldn't work. for about $40, however, you could get the DRL back using a pressure switch in the oil filter base, and a Hamsar DRL module. i have those instructions also. i also have instructions for the rear rewire to change the backup lights to amber turns, and a rewire scheme for the fogs.
