.357 SIG, Again

Seriously, if I didn't already have 2 . 45s - the Kimber and a Springfield 1911A1 - I'd absolutely get something in . 357 SIG caliber. SIG, Glock and some others all make pistols in this caliber now. As I said, it's a bottleneck cartridge (. 40 case necked down to 9 mm bullet) so the chance of a misfeed is about zero. Also, being physically smaller than . 45 cartridge allows higher magazine capacity - SIG P229 holds 10 for civilians - and stopping power nearly equals . 357 magnum and . 45 ACP. FPS usually runs close to 1400 fps

My nephew is major league federal LEO - mostly undercover - told me a couple weeks ago that his latest guvmint issue duty pistol is a SIG (P229) in . 357 cal. Our tax $$$ at work  He said "I can see now why you've been hyping this round to me for the last 5 years. Awesome" :D BTW, he routinely hits center-of-mass at 50 yds.

Another nice feature with . 357 SIG cal. is the the SIG pistols have an available . 40 cal barrel which is interchangeable with the . 357 barrel for those so inclined who want one pistol that shoots both. Uses same magazines for both calibers.

So will24, bottom line is I would look seriously at that Springfield XD - 4" barrel, . 357 Sig caliber. Also check out the ported model - same gun, just ported barrel - less muzzle jump - faster on target followup shots, etc, etc. Looks like a helluva lot of gun for the $$$.

I sure love that Kimber but even though it's a compact it sure gets heavy after awhile :(

Hey, maybe I could keep the Kimber in the truck and get an XD for carry - hmmmmm. OK, I'm done now.

On second thought, I forgot to mention ammo. I've researched ballistics alot and find that Hydrashoks are good - that's what I carry, but also look at Reminton Golden Saber and Ranger SXT. The SXT is law enforcement only - it's too violent for us civilians  You all may remember the SXT by its original name ---> the dreaded Black Talon.

OK, this time I'm really done.

Bill, I can't let you take Doc's crappy ol Kimber, let me take the hit on that one for you. ;) I've got a Sig 229 in 40, my LEO nephew has the same gun in 357 Sig, barrel is the only change necessary to change calibers, pretty neat feature.

I still have 2. 5 boxes of Black Talon in 9mm sitting in my gun safe - I also still have some odd-six Black Talon boxes (5 or 6) still left over ;).

I also tried the SXT, bought them at Gary's Gun Shop in Sioux Falls, SD, if I'm not mistaken, but I prefer the Hydrashocks in 230.

I carry the stainless steel Kimber Compact, the wife carries the black alunimum one. Have had that CCW since 1995, and carried ever since - the 9mm Glock, a . 40 Beretta, and now the Kimber. Hmmm... maybe it's time to check out the newer carry pistols :)

I have the HS2000 croatian import that the springfield is based upon. I bought it right when it first came out a few years back. Got a deal on it for 239 if i can remember. Now that springfield bought the rights they've ofcourse jacked the price. It's a nice pistol that I handle and shoot very well. It is DA only, which can be a pain but it has taught me to be a better shooter. Mine is only a 9mm, they hadn't released the . 40 yet and I couldn't pass on the price.

I like . 40 myself, . 45 ACP is great, but i don't shoot it well. . 357 SIG is a fine caliber, but difficult to load, I prefer . 40 again. All in all I think that this is a great gun, any caliber can perform... it's the shooter that can make the difference.

OK guys, here's the REAL skinny as far as I'm concerned. (IMHO) A 1911-style . 45 ACP is SA, can be carried cocked and locked so you pull the pistol, thumb down the safety and pull the trigger and it's the SAME TRIGGER PULL EVERY TIME. No DA/SA, DA only or whatever.

I like it. :)

Had to plug Springfield. My 1911 in 45 super is just too much fun. Leagal to hunt with and can chamber standard 45 rounds.

3 hogs and counting :D . Love the SA like RT66DOC, no fuss on muss. Little big for every day CCW though. Buy what is comfortable, shoots straight and will cycle error free. Remember that it could be your hammer on a bad day. Shoot whatever you get often and have fun.

What AKAMAC said.

Oh, I forgot to mention the Wilson Combat 8 round magazine - fits the Kimber and the Springfield, has a nice little rubber pad on the bottom so you don't hurt your palm when you slam it in and feeds like a champ. Gives you 8+1. I bought it from Dillon in AZ.

Speaking of Dillon, all you gun nuts out there DO get the "Blue Press" now, don't you? :D It's free ya know.

I was going to get one when SOG had them for $199. 99, but I was "convinced" that they were a POS.

Big mistake.
