Try to keep this short.

Truck was parked for a day after an 800 mile trip to Talladega. Got in to start and it cranked hard, then fired, ran rough I moved it where I needed to, and shut it down. Tried to refire and it wouldnt start, just cranked and cranked. Figured it was the shut off solenoid. Lifted the plunger and it still cranked alot then fired up running rough and smoked like crazy. Drove it 800 miles back home never shutting it off. Tore apart the solenoid, the boot was ripped. Cleaned it up and it has started every time since. Now once in a while when it starts I will put it in gear and it gets rough and almost stalls, sometimes it is fine. Idle is at 700 in drive with a/c on, changed return hose last year. Doesnt seem to smoke abnormally and it starts with just a bump of the key. I hate to up the idle anymore because with my new transmission, it drops into gear pretty hard as it is. Stretched the overflow valve once last year. Seems to run fine otherwise.

In addition to supply/return line the soft line at the lift pump also goes bad. My lift pump line was seriously dry rotted.

Sorry, didnt mean to ask a question and then not come back. LOL

Been extremely busy lately.

I'll give that lift pump hose a change when I clean my screen again. The fuel filter is getting close to a change, been on long enough, I dont think its leaking. This all started after the shut off solenoid deal. I think sometimes it may not be pulling up all the way. I think I'm gonna go with a hand pull cable in the cab. I read the manual, haven't had time to check the length adjustment of the solenoid lever yet, but when I had it off to clean it, I didnt change anything so I assumed its still within spec.

Chris

P. S. Hasn't done it for a week or better now, oops, probably just jinxed myself.

Also, any idea how to tell the condition of injectors without removing them? 160,000 miles on stockers.

Is the throttle linkage moving freely? That could prevent the solenoid from moving properly.

Only way to check the injectors, is to pull them and take them to a fuel injection shop. Then they can check pop-off pressure and spray pattern.

stalling

I've developed a nasty problem of stalling when I come to a stop... . If I keep the rpms around 900 when I stop, then roll on, it's OK. If I go to neutral, it idles with a slight lope 50-150 rpm, then bump the throttle before going into drive... It's also getting harder to start if it dies. My mechanic diagnosed it as a locked torque converter, but after replacement, we've still got the same problem... ... ... bummer... . new fuel filter and lift pump

They took it to a dealer to use his diagnotics, to no avail... . we've never had any codes show up.....

Help... ... Stuck in the mountains... ... ... ...

I've only put 7000 of the 117000 on it, and until now it's been a great rig... ...

RLayman,

You need to post this in the 24 valve forum.

Our 12 valve fuel system is completely different.

The usual problem with a 12 valve is that the idle is too low. It should be at least 750 in D with the AC on. 800 is better.

My idle is on the money at 750 but if the truck runs a while and then i stop at a light it likes to stall out. My oil pressure light comes on (guage is dead) and i freak out. I had my a/c recharged last week and since i've been using it the idle dropped about 75 rpm with it on.

O. K. i'll try it. I thought the same thing but i wanted to ask before i started tinkering. Also, have you got any idea what the catch in my throttle is? It only does it when the engine is off. After that it's gone but every time it shuts off the catch is there and the truck will not start. I talked to some guys locally that said theirs don't do that, but they run 24 valve trucks. Any help is GREATLY appreciated. Sorry for stealing the thread guys.

biggy238,

That is normal because of the way the governor works in the P7100 pump. If it's not turning there is a stiff place. Some are worse than others, but it's no problem.

Joe G,

Thanks for easing my worries on that one. If you don't mind and have time, check out my post about "WHERE'S MY POWER" and see what you think. no-one else has had much to say about it.
