I'm aware of the benefits of fuel conditioners/anti-gel in cold weather, but I was wondering how many of you use these products during warm weather too/all year long.



Am I wasting my money? (ps I'm not looking for performance gains, or even better mpg, just wondering if it is "good" for the motor).

I've been using it since '99 when ever I get fuel. Mileage did go up a little. I see it as cheap insurance for the lubricating properties.
 
Stanadyne Performance Formula

I bought a case of 24 oz. bottles a year ago from the Bosch Authorized service center here in town after listening to a seminar from the shop owner. That was a good enough recommendation for me. I just bought a new case this week, about a year's supply for me. I think of it as insurance for good pump lubrication and keeping the fuel tank free of algae and water from condensation on those rare humid days here in the desert. I usually buy my fuel at a truck stop, so I'm sure it hasn't been sitting in the ground for long. But sometimes, when traveling, you take what you can get and it's nice to have that bottle of Stanadyne waiting under the back seat.
 
I use it every tank full. I have noticed a increase in milage. Also the engine seemed quiter, I think the pump is getting better lubercation. .

I have used it every tankful for almost 250,000 miles in the following vehicles:

1997 Ram 2500 108,000 miles

2003 Ram 2500 21,000 miles

1986 Isuzu Trooper II TD 54,000 miles

1999 Jetta TDI 64,000 miles

This equates to a whole lot of those bottles over the years, and not a dime of it was wasted. The lubricity alone is cheap insurance against problems stemming from injection pumps that are lubricated solely by diesel fuel. The increase in mileage, is another thing. Over a lengthy amount of driving, even a mere 1mpg average increase is quite substantial.
 
Not only what everyone said, at 130,000 miles I changed the OEM injectors for DD1's. The OEM injectors that we removed were as clean as new. Stanadyne PF and Junior from mile one.
 
I use it every time I fill up and my volunteer fire department has been using it since 1997 with no problems. However... dont you wish Stanadyne would put a little pull tab on the foil seal? Wouldn't it be nice to pull once and remove the entire thing in one piece? I always have fear of small pieces being dumped into the tank and being sucked into the hose... where they remain lodged forever and cause problems. I take the extra time to cut the seal out with tiny knife blade.



I wrote Stanadyne and asked why. No response.
 
I have been using Stanadyne almost since day one. I figured cheap insurance.



Boondocker, was the seminar at May Madness last year? This year at May Madness Scott Gerrard from J & S Diesel Service gave a seminar about injector pumps. He is an authorized Bosch service center in Las Vegas. He sells Stanadyne, or as he said it sell itself. He recommended Stanadyne or a least some type of lubrication additive. He said he was seeing a lot of dry diesel in the Nevada, Arizona. I use an additive mainly for lubrication.



I use Stanadyne every other tank alternating with a biocide. After hearing his talk I now uses Lubricity Formula from stanadyne with the biocide.



As Scott said you will see him someday either for an additive or a pump rebuild. He said he has a $500K machine he is betting on it. Bosch is phasing out production of the VP44, new high pressure rail pump demand. Some day soon there will be only rebuilt pumps.



With the new low sulfur fuels with less lubrication it is cheap insurance. Doesn't need to be Stanadyne but at least something.

Cap-n-Cray - You're exactly right. I was at May Madness last year and took in Scott's seminar. Bought a case off the back of his truck. I was a little late getting to May Madness this year and missed his talk. So I called him last week and went down to his shop to buy a case over the counter. He said that Stanadyne gave him a show deal to sell the 24 oz. bottle cases at $65, and he sold out. At least he gave me 5 bucks off the $75 retail.



I usually fill up about 20 gallons, so get about 3-4 servings per bottle. I'm probably a little light on the ratio... when I buy from my regular fuel source.



Ncostello - So true about the stupid foil seals! Maybe this stuff expands, but my bottles all seem to be about 101% full. I cannot pop open a bottle without spillage. I've learned to always wrap the bottle with a paper towel, then I pierce the edge of the neck with a small knife blade and cut about 350 degrees around, then grip the foil and try to pull the remainder off the rim to get all the foil off. It doesn't always work, but I'm very cognizent of foil particles.

Then there's storage. I keep mine in the tray under the rear seat. Don't lay an opened bottle horizontal, it will leak! You can tell by smell! I'm so glad I have Husky floor liners! The technique here is to have 2 bottles, one sealed, the other opened. At least in my truck, they can't both lay flat in that left-front partition, so the opened one is propped up at about a 30-degree angle, this prevents leakage. I still always keep a paper towel wrapped around it. No matter how carefull you are about pouring, one drip goes a long ways, and it takes a couple of washings to get it off your skin.

Been thinking of writing Stanadyne for a long time, never got around to it. Thanks for doing it. I'm going to call them. If enough of us complained they might do something, but the cost would go up. I have seen some liquids that come with an inner cap to seal the remaining portion and then the screw cap goes back on. I'm searching for one that will fit their bottle so it doesn't leak.

I get mine in a 5 gallon can from Cummins for $103. $20 / gallon and fill 2 @ 1/2 gallon Stanadyne jugs. I carry 1 1/2 gallon jug and 1 8oz Stanadyne single fill bottle. I think that works out to about $1. 28 for the 8oz bottle, about $. 05 a gallon of fuel.



I dump the bottle in (be careful to not dump in the cardboard seal in the cap) and while the pump is filling I refill the Stanadyne single 8 oz bottle. That way I only have 1 Stanadyne 8oz bottle and 1 Stanadyne 1/2 gallon jug with me in the truck and never have the foil issues, since I refill everything from a 5 gallon can with a siphon hose.



I put 8 oz in about 24 gallons which is where my low fuel gong goes off.



Works good so far, but only have 32,000 miles and no failures in the fuel system.
