Frank, This is one of those personal preferance things, you will get a hundred different oppinons. They are both good, I use PS , its cheaper, easier to get, and does what it's supposed to do.

A lot of guys swear by Stanadyne - sounds like a very good product. Like Chuck, I've always used Power Service because it's easy to get and economical. I've never had any problems.

Stanadyne performance formula

is what I have used for 4 years. As for price, I buy it in the 5 gal can for $125. I have found this to be a fairly good price. Most places try to sell it for around $150 per 5 gal. that i have found. I also bought a case (12 bottle) of 16 ounce bottles to refill over and over. I use 8 oz per fill up if its down below 3\4 tank and skip adding it every three fillups. anyway at $150 per 5 gals that 640 oz at . 23cents per oz =$1. 87 per filup if thats helps compare.

John, I buy the Power Service at Wally's mart for around 11 bucks a gal. I'm sure the stanadyne is good but I don't know if its twice as good, or three times as good. But I could be wrong. just my 2 cts.

I use the Stanadyne in my truck at every fill up, I treat for 45 gals every 30 gallon fill up.

Just one note of caution, I traveled to the U. P. within 2 weeks of getting my truck, temps hit -40 from 80 here in Tampa. I had bought The Stanadyne Winter Formula to treat the fuel but realized I was going to run out somewhere in Ohio so I bought the PS on the road. I didnt use all the Stanadyne and while in the U. P it froze soild in the bottle. The PS remained liquid even at -40. I think I would have gelled or frozen solid if I had had the Stanadyne in the tank.

I have never tryed Stanadyne because I have never found a local source. I get PS for 11 per gallon from wally world or from Ranch and Home Supply for around 9 dollars per gallon. It has worked fine but there bottles are terrible and tend to leak. I also over dose on the stuff a little just to be safe.

Stanadyne PF

Yes it will freeze with not mixed with fuel. No it will not gell down to -35. This is as cold as I have tested it.

I have never tried Power Service but would think it is good stuff also.

I only add the Stanadyne if temps get below zero (like tonight).

Which below zero? Florida or Canadian scale? We're only supposed to be in the teens overnite here.

Did you get any of the snow? We got a dusting of a few inches. A few miles south they got 6 inches and up.

I curious to see if I have a fuel problem this winter. The ESPAR system has an 1/8" fuel line. It may need some #1 or kerosene blend to help the flow when temps dip below 0° Florida scale.

I'm using the Howe's Diesel Treat, but will try Shell Rotella DFA this winter, especially if I use winterized fuel. Sam's has the Rotella very cheap.

Ted;

Are you using the standard Montana winterized fuel in combination with your PS dosing?

From the Chevron diesel website,

"It may be helpful to regard additives as medicine for fuel. Like medicine, they should be prescribed by an expert who has made an effort to diagnose the problem. And they should only be used in accordance with the recommendations of the engine manufacturer and the instructions of the additive supplier. Sometimes indiscriminant use of additives or mixing of different types can do more harm than good because of unexpected interactions. "

That's why I use Howe's per their instructions, you can get it anywhere. Power Serice is also easy to come by, but Stanadyne is just a plain hassle...

Hi Guys,

I have used the Howe's and the Stanadyne PF. As well, my younger brother (brand new TDR member) uses the SPF.

I have had no problems with the Stanadyne with temps as low as -15C

My brother has had his 92CTD sit for 5 days (no block heater) in

-35C in the interior of BC with no gelling or starting problems.

Neither of us have tried the Howe's that low. Cost is about $11. 00 for that 16oz bottle referenced above, or around $115. 00 case of 12 (i think).

John,

Now that I loook at the bottle again I am not exceeding there doseage but I am giving closer to the "for quick cleaning" dose. I go sick of trying to figure out exactly how much I should add per estimated amount of fuel being added so I just add as much as it might require. That is with winter fuel or every forth tank or so on summer fuel just to lube things up

Ted

I'm currently using Stanadyne Performance Formula however, I have also used Red Line 85+ as well as Amsoil Diesel Fuel Concentrate, all at every fillup. I have had equal success with all three products. Since I added my Transfer Flow 54 gal. replacement fuel tank I add excatly a half a bottle of the Stanadyne P. F. each time I fill up.

I would however, like to try the Power Service and Lubrication Engineers products. I may have already used the Holy Grail of Diesel fuel conditioners or maybe one of the two I haven't tried will prove to be it..... hmmm.

I personally use Stanadyne in both of my trucks...

Frank. . BTW, CMP gives it to the RMTDR members at a pretty killer price.

just my $02

Power Service

I use the Power Service and hate the messy bottles so here's what I did.

I buy the 1 gallon jugs but have always kept of few of the 32oz bottles around to re use.

I fill the 32oz bottles to the level I need. When I get to the fuel station I just dump the 32oz bottle upside down in the fuel spout. There's never a mess because I've emptied the bottle.

I actually keep the 1 gallon jug and two of the 32oz bottles in a bucket that's in my tool box.

I haven't spilled one drop since.

On a side note, have any of you folks that are regularly using a lubricating fuel additive had any of these lift pump problems? I've been using the Power Service regularly and don't have any of the lift pump symptoms. But, I only got 25K on her.

Canadian or Florida

Never heard it explained that way. I must be using the Florida scale. Just T-shirts down to 32, light jackets to zero and coats when below zero... . only if your outside for more then an hour otherwise a light jacket is fine. No need for caps or gloves, every freezes off before highschool.

We are all short and fat for reason!

A balmy 10 F at high noon today.

degrees C or F

Canadian & Floridian were the only words that came to mind when typing thinking of usage, geographically and that matched the letters.

Much warmer here. It kept snowing and got warm enough to get the roads really slick at noon. Temps dropped a bit this afternoon.

Where does everyone find the gallon jugs of Power Service? The only jugs I find are 96 oz. which is 3 not 4 quarts. The best prices I find are from the local farm supply stores on sale. A 3 quart jug is down around $7. 00 or so.

Bill;

Howe's label says to add X amount if ... or Y amount if ...

It also waives the above by stating overuse is not harmful.

I believe the Chevron statement is similar to the general warning to not mix oil brands or even viscosities of the same brand in your crankcase.

?

Gallon.

John

Most Wal mart sells the gallon jugs or if you don't have a wm try your local truck stop they carry them for a little more $ . Or maybe Auto part store will have them the do around here.
