John, you very well could be right, but after watching the results some of the researchers at work get by mixing different common chemicals together I'm a little leery.

I guess I'm Lucky, I'm on the (F)lorida scale, Its hitting a brutal 63 degees overnight. When it hits the low 50's here the whining starts from all the wussies down here.

When I spoke of the Stanadyne frezzing in the bottle, the PS was in a bottle right next to it and it wasn't frozen at all. I'm not knocking the Stanadyne, I use it at every fill up, but when I travel up north I will use the PS just because of my little unscientific experiment results... -40 frozen v. s. unfrozen.

Central Florida and still in shorts... no flames please, its already too hot!!!

PS Treatment

There is no gallon size, most folks call the 96 oz the gallon container.

I have seen 16oz, 32 oz, 96 oz and 2. 5 gallon containers, I think you can also purchase 55 gallon drums.

I use 8 oz per fill up if its down below 3\4 tank and skip adding it every three fillups. anyway at $150 per 5 gals that 640 oz at . 23cents per oz =$1. 87 per filup if thats helps compare.

That is about 3-4 times what I paid for Rottella DFA - 384 oz's for $25. 00 with rebate. Got it at Sams club for $33. 00 and Rottella gives a $8. 00 rebate coupon on their web site per case (4-96oz bottles). The Rottella costs . 0217 cents per gallon treated. None of this stuff can be that much better than the other, and if it is it would take a chemical engineer to prove it :)

I pay $8. 00 for a 96 oz. bottle of Power Service at Fleet Farm - treats 300 gallons. Less than . 03 cents a gallon - I can't find a better deal than that.

My neighbor is a diesel injection mechanic. He says the Pwer Service is good stuff. . . but it's not the best for the VP44. He says Stanadyne is the best choice. He says the Stanadyne works better with the extremely tight tolerances of our injection pumps whereas the PS is not formulated with that in mind. PS is great for the inline pumps and big rigs though. I don't know how much of an expert he is but after being in this field for over 20 years I tend to think he knows what he is talking about.

I work in the oil field in Alaska. The island that I work on had (untill they switched to Natural Gas Turbines) 12, 25,000 gallon tanks of diesel sitting on the ground. Sitting right next to them were 3 barrels of Power Service Disel 911. They put it in every load of fuel that went out of those tanks. This fuel ran everything from the 966 loaders to the cummins ememrgency fire pump to the generatiors that power the living quarters. I figure that if they can use it up here where the temp gets to -50 F then it ought to work fine in my truck at 10 F.

Not to flame you but PS 9-1-1 contains alcohol and is designed for emergency use after the fuel has gelled or contains water. It's best not to use any fuel additive containing alcohol on a diesel, it will greatly lower the lubricity of the fuel and can wreck your injection pump. Label even says for emergency use, that's why PS calls it 9-1-1.

.....the answer is out there

I have been using a quality Diesel fuel additive at every fillup since 3k mi. (Red Line 85+ then I switched to Amsoil Diesel Fuel Concentrate, switching again to Stanadyne Performance Formula). Since then, I had my OE lift pump go out at (guessing) 48k and its replacement at around 63k. I also thought there might be something to this last year..... until the OE lift pump puked.

FYI: the only reason I switched Diesel fuel additives a few times was to gain fist hand knowledge of what works best in my Ram.

You know guys,

I don’t know if Stanadyne is all that much better than Power service if at all. I guess when I was looking for a year round additive the stanadyne PF had the more impressive information available, and maybe I figured if it cost more it must be better! Maybe it is and then again maybe it isn’t! At this point it is probably product loyalty because my last two truck ran noticeably better using it and I have never had any problems. I May have had the same results with PS…. I don’t live in an extreme northern latitude and we don’t get the severe long term cold here in Colorado, but this post has made me think about it. Here is a sample of both of there claims.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Stanadyne

Year-round application - improves performance in summer and in winter. Reduces No. 2 fuel pour point by up to 40 degrees Fahrenheit.

Improved horsepower - with up to a 5 point cetane rating gain, resulting in noticeably better acceleration; fewer downshifts, etc.

Increases fuel economy - more efficient combustion and increased power can result in up to 8% improvement in MPG, thus easily paying for itself.

Easier and faster start-up - especially from cold.

Reduced smoke and particulate emmisions - cleaner burn.

Longer service intervals - detergents protect and clean injectors and help remove deposits and and prevent plugging. Lubricants reduce wear of costly injection system components.

Upgrades and stabilizes fuel - No need to buy expensive blended fuel. Reduces sludge and fuel tank contaminants.

Alcohol free - Avoids corrosion and accelerated wear.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Power Service

Year-Around:

Boosts cetane up to 4 numbers – promotes smoother engine operation with less power lag

Cleans injectors – exceeds engine manufacturer's specifications

Reduces emissions and black exhaust smoke

increases power – reduces need for downshifting

Decreases fuel consumption – fuel savings exceed cost of additive

Lubricates fuel injectors and pumps – reduces wear

Disperses water in diesel fuel

Contains no alcohols

In Winter:

Prevents fuel gelling in temperatures as low as -40°F.

Equals performance of a 50/50 blend of No. 2 and No. 1 diesel fuels

Lowers Cold-Filter Plugging Point (CFPP) as much as 36°F. – keeps fuel-filters from plugging with wax

Boosts cetane up to 4 number for easier starts

Contains anti-icing additive – protects against fuel-filter icing

-----------------------------------------

Shell ROTELLATM DFA has advanced additive technology specifically designed for today's high performance, fuel-efficient, low-emission diesel engines. It exceeds the fuel injector cleanliness requirements of the Cummins L-10 specification, and with regular use, will provide the following benefits:

Cleans dirty fuel injectors

Prevents fuel gelling down to -40oF

Improves cold starting

Increases power

Reduces emissions

Lubricates fuel-injection system and engine

Disperses water

Increases fuel mileage

ROTELLA DFA can improve your fuel's cetane number as much as 3 points, which can provide:

Easier ignition and quicker start-up at low temperatures

Faster, smoother warm-up

Reduced white smoke at start-up

Decreased engine noise

Reduced misfire

Lower soot levels

Applications and specifications

ROTELLA DFA is a diesel fuel additive package intended for use as a bottled all season aftermarket product in #2 diesel fuel. The 96-oz. bottle of ROTELLA DFA is used to treat 300 gallons of fuel, and the 32-oz. bottle is used to treat 100 gallons of fuel. Is is ashless and does not contain chlorine, alcohol or phosphorus. At normal treat rates, ROTELLA DFA delivers "superior" detergency performance as defined by the Cummins Material Specification 60032. Using ROTELLA DFA at higher concentration levels increases the cleaning power of your fuel even more. At higher dosages, ROTELLA DFA can deliver piston-cleaning performance!
