Engine/Transmission (1994 - 1998) Standard transmission Rebuilt 4500 ... is it good?

Who here has purchased a Standard Transmission rebuilt 4500 with a new fully splinned main shaft and new parts?



Would you do it again? Did the 5th gear fail on the rebuilt ST transmission?



Would you recommend them highly to others?



Since the $$$ to convert to a 5600 is just too much and a new 4500 with the Torque King main shaft form Quad 4X4 is over $3500 (an option I am seriously thinking about), I would like to be able to save $$$ but not at at reliability cost.



I want a complete unit to be ready to install, not rebuild my old one (I don't have the ability to do it and don't know of a good shop to do it in my area).

Come on, someone has to have a good/bad/neutral opinion on the Std. Trans. remanuf. with the full splined main shaft.



Did anyone have the 5th gear nut back off one of these full splined main shafts?

Have read several opinions about Standard Trans. Don't remember any negative remarks.

I sent mine to standard transmissiion last fall. I needed bearings but opted for a new splined main/fifth gear.

The transmission seems ok now, quiet, but does not shift as nice as it used to. It is hard to get into reverse. Probably has something to do with the tolerances on the new main shaft not being as close as they should.

Cost for berings, shaft, fifth gear, and several synchros was about 1K. Not bad considering the alternatives.

I had my 4500 rebuilt after loosing 5th gear. Th shop that did it was highly reccomended bla bla bla. well The trans blew up, set up to tight. I bought a rebuilt transmission from standard gear, excellent service and have had no problems with the transmission. I have it in my 96 1 ton that pulls ALOT daily. I would highly recommend them and would do it again in a heart beat!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

RAndrae, when you say "Standard gear" do you mean "Standard Transmission"?



Does your "new" rebuilt transmission have the fully splined main shaft?



On Tuesday I will be visiting Blue Chip Diesel for a diagnosis on my (what I suspect) transmission issue. Any "new" transmission I have put in, I want it to be the last. I don't want to have to touch it again ... and maybe I'll upgrade the Con-O to the Con-OFE.

I also am unsatisfied with the rebuilt trans with the fully splined shaft from Standard Trans.

The first one made a lot of noise, after several calls they sent another one.

It doesnt shift right but they said no warranty one the 2nd one.

I had my 4500 rebuilt by ST. It failed 8000 miles later while I was in Oregon. They fed-exed another trans and paid for the R & R. Even though it was determined a bad pilot bushing caused the failure there was no charge. I recommend them highly. I believe all their rebuilds come with an updated shaft and gear.

I've had excellent results with Std. Trans. stuff. It is easy to blame a trans when the problem is a pilot bearing or a bent clutch disk hub (from poor istallation or removal, letting the trans "hang" on the hub while not directly in line). See the write up in issue 30 & 31 of the magazine.
