I need to know what kind of bolts are used to hold the starter together on my '98. I bought a new starter from NAPA and want to rebuild my old one to keep as a spare, but the long bolts that hold the motor together both broke. I drilled the holes out but need to know the thread size to tap for and where to get replacements.

Can't help you with the size but you are doing the right thing by keeping you old starter if it is the OEM. Try going to a electrical rebuild place they can tell you the size and sell you new bolts.

I was going to rebuild it myself with parts from Larry B's, but I may have to take it and have it rebuilt just to get the bolts.

I ended up taking the starter to a local starter alternator rebuilder and he fixed everything for me. It was pretty expensive and I learned a lesson about taking things apart and losing/breaking pieces, but I've got a good spare starter when this NAPA junk dies.

Did NAPA do away with their lifetime warranty? I had rebuilt my OEM starter once & when it failed again, I got a NAPA starter with a lifetime warranty. Figured I'd never have to buy another one.

Did you call Larry B on the phone? I think they can get or will have whatever you need..... I've got a problem with the local places not being worth a darn. I've had several tractor starters and alternators rebuilt, but they just don't last. I found another place last week, but haven't tried them yet. I've got several spares around so I can just rebuild one and replace it.

I'm not sure about the NAPA warranty. The hassle of replacing them so often is the dealbreaker. That starter might last a long time but it has a really cheap sound to it. It doesn't seem to turn as fast as the Denso either. I never called Larry B because I could never figure out the thread size for the bolts I broke off. I guess I should have just ordered them from him and then tapped the case. Oh well I really like our local rebuilder, and he seems to do a great job.

Well, if you've found a good honest guy to do your work, then you're golden!! I'm gonna try another one, I guess. It's so hard to get good parts, for me. The Dodge starters are no problem, what with people like Foster's..... but the bigger ones on the Big Cams and Cats are a different matter..... and buying a reman'd one at NAPA or Orielly's is out of the question, without a bank loan!!!
