Got a 96 2500 that the starter engaged while driving down the road. The wiring to the shutoff solenoid is toast. We replaced the solenoid about 5 mos ago, no problems till now. Anyone seen this problem before?

Good ol' starter hang up - yup we see it all of time. The srater contacts wear inside of it causing the starter to hang and then backflow current up throught the wiring to the shut off solenoid, etc... There is a kit to replace them with larger contacts. I think it's www.fostertruck.com

They are an advertiser on this site. Maybe someone else can confirm the web page. Definately change the contacts as some have reported significant damage (i. e. fire).

Thanks for the info. I figured it was in the ign side wiring or the starter. Wanted to know if anybody else had seen it.

Give Larry a call about his starter contacts... . He is great to deal with...

Both my 97 and 2000 have his starter contacts and plungers already installed in them. .

Ditto all of the above. I always try to keep an extra set of contacts on hand. Did a friends 99 shortly after he got it. My truck was starting like the batteries were dying. Replaced the brushes and did the contacts while I was at it. Fixed the problem. I told my uncle with a 97 if he ever had problems similiar to let me know to take care of it cheaper. It happened, he told me about it after that fact. Paid for new starter and shutoff selenoid!! All of my parts came from Larry. Great to deal with. Inexpensive better fix.

Definitely replace the starter contacts, while you're in there check the condition of the brushes. Mine finally went at 265k miles and I was stuck at a gas station. I managed to get my hands on a starter and get back on the road, but it was an unneccessary expense for a new starter. I've been through a few sets of the original style contacts. The super ones from LarryB should last for a long time(were still good when I traded the old starter in)

Got a couple of sets of contacts coming... I didn't know that these bigger contacts were avail. we've been brazing contacts and replacing the real bad ones in the Jap starters on small chryslers and many others for a while now. Good to know that we don't have to waste time making new ones.

hehe. . had to make one out of copper tubing once just to make it home that night. Worked fine for at least several weeks until I got LarryB's super contacts. :)
