I am sure this is a replace the starter, but.....

get in the truck, a 98 12V batteries are good, 53k miles. Most times the truck starts instantly. Then you have the time the truck starts and you hear the starter whine away for 2 seconds. Then you hear the click, like a dead battery. It might do that one or 2 or 3 times, then bang fies right off.

I an thinking r and r the starter?

M1A,

It would be worth your time to pull the starter out and take the solenoid cap off IF you are sure that you are good to the soleniod with your power supply and cabeling.

The solenoids are east to inspect and replacement contacts are available from Geno's

Search on Larry B contacts.

Good luck.

Its definitely your contacts. Mileage doesnt have anything to do with it, its all about number of engine starts.

You need a set of replacement contacts and the replacement solenoid plunger, thats it. The nippondenso starter in these trucks is almost a lifetime unit. Replacements (other brands) are definitely NOT.

You need a long 10mm box wrench, and a few small wrenches to get the power cables off the starter. Discon the batteries first, obviously.

That sound when the starter doesnt disengage is -very- bad. Starters/fuel solenoids have caught on fire when they stick on.

middle of page. cheap fix.

Replacing the contacts through Geno's was easy. When I did my 98, I found that it was also easy to damage the insulator behind the main (+) terminal after 12 years of never removing the installed (+) cable. Geno's now carrys the replacement stud and insulator, you should buy it and have it on hand if you decide to do the job.

everything was very simple, and with the exception of the little rubber boot over the terminal that has the cable affixed to it, all was good. I was a little concerned about the horror stories I read of the top bolt, but I reached up with one hand and broke it loose. Less than a hour to do it start to finish:-laf
