beats having to R & R the box. If it were me I would count the turns as I removed the stud and nut and coat it with permatex and put it back in using the same number of turns. If the nut turns hard enough you might be able to position it where it belongs and when the stud was back in far enough the nut would act as a stop. A shop manuel will tell you that the over center adjustment, as it is called, can not be made with the box in the truck. If you read enough on here you see where guys do adjust it and do improve the slop. However that is not the purpose of that adjustment. It should not be used except during rebuilding. I tinkered with my old box in desperation and since it was not the problem it did not help much.
