Hi I was just wondering who makes really good aftermarket steering boxes for the 2nd gen rams?? I remember there was a few compinies but I just cant remember the names. Money isnt really a concern as it is the steering I'm dealing with lol.

Thanks, Travis

A rebuilt box rebuilt by competent re-builder is your best bet. That way you are sure to get the right box for your truck. Steering boxes are very different on the inside and look the same on the outside. "Chip" at Power Steering Services is excelent. (417) 864 6676 located in Springfield Missouri. Dodge in their ignorance has installed a lot of WRONG boxes. On the assembly line and at dealerships. These are the Saginaw boxes manufactured by GM that are causing all the problems. They are good boxes but dodge does not know about the internal differences. I believe GM purposely sold the wrong boxes to dodge to make dodge look bad. You may have the box that is 4&1/4 turns stop to stop. The right box will turn only 3 turns stop to stop and will have the small pistions. Just to make sure turn the input shaft before installation and see if it turns 3 turns stop to stop. Mine was wrong from new and wandered terrible and the one Chip sent me made my truck steer like a car. REGARDS Jim -- email address removed --

I tested my lock to lock and determined mine was indeed 3 turns so that is good, but it is leaking from the top adjusting nut. I'm going to contact a reputable local performance power steering rebuilder here in San Diego and discuss my options. He can alter ratios, pressures etc. I've got a slight leak in my vacuum pump now(51,000 miles :{ ) so I'll have 'em take a look at that as well. Depending on the outcome, I'll post results. They are supposed to be excellent.

beats having to R & R the box. If it were me I would count the turns as I removed the stud and nut and coat it with permatex and put it back in using the same number of turns. If the nut turns hard enough you might be able to position it where it belongs and when the stud was back in far enough the nut would act as a stop. A shop manuel will tell you that the over center adjustment, as it is called, can not be made with the box in the truck. If you read enough on here you see where guys do adjust it and do improve the slop. However that is not the purpose of that adjustment. It should not be used except during rebuilding. I tinkered with my old box in desperation and since it was not the problem it did not help much.

Thanks!
