It was recommended to me a year or 2 ago to get new ball joints for my truck. I didnt buy that, so I got a second opinion. The 2nd opinion said there was a little wear, but come see him again a 2-3 years. IMO, the ball joints are still pretty good today.

I've noticed now that my steering wheel tries to go left-right when I go over a little bump while at low speed. I still dont buy ball joints as the problem. Maybe steering shaft, but Ill have that looked at.

Im guessing that the steering dampener is probably getting a little worn, but not to where its a real problem.

So, here is my question. If I replace the steering dampener, will it be harder on the ball joints ? Not as hard on the ball joints ? No difference ? My reasoning is that, if the wheels have a little play with the worn dampener, it takes a little pressure off of the ball joints.

For the cost of the dampener, I'd give it a shot - shouldn't make any more or less pressure on the ball joints - if it helps - good, if not - you didn't spend much to see.

Since you have an 02, you still have the old style track bar, right? (the one with a ball joint on the frame end, not a captive end)

If you havent changed or upgraded it, I would definitely investigate it. Mine is crappin out right now, thinking about the 3rd gen bar upgrade, but its a little spensive. . sigh.

With the truck running, have someone move the steering just enough to flex the body, but not move the wheels. Turn it right then left, and watch the truck side joint for excessive play.

The dampner can be checked by removing one side from the truck, and manually actuating the shock. If you have decent resistance, theres nothing wrong.

good luck

Thanks for the input. Ive actually looked at the trac bar and it looks pretty solid. Surprised me since all of the negative posts. I expected to see it pretty loose.

I probably will replace the steering shock. But if it makes my ball joints last longer by not replacing the shock (at least at this point), I would probably wait a while.
