I have a 2006 2500 4x4 and when turning in low speeds like turning into a parking lot or turning into the drive way I hear a light popping noise that I can feel all the way into the steering wheel. With out the truck running and a buddy moving the steering wheel back and forth for me I have narrowed the popping noise down to- coming from the steering box. This is my first diesel (and loving it) and i've only owned for about 3 months and new to the TDR. Just curious if anyone else has had the same issue or any thoughts on possible repair besides full replacement? Thanks for any pointers!

Are you getting it while rolling only, or sitting still and moving the wheel? If rolling it may be a dry front axle U-Joint. Look for rust around the caps.

I get it when sitting still and moving the wheel back and forth and also get it while driving but only at very low speeds.

I agree with Sag2... I've had several of these trucks over the years... lots of front u-joints... never a steering gear box... I live where chemical treatment is a common place in the winter... I personally think that chemical really attacks the seals on the u-joints...

Mine would pop the same way when in a tight turn... I do have one suggestion.. if you can hear the pop you should be able to hear it... place your hand on the steering system (tie rods, ball joints, gear box... etc..) and have someone turn the wheel... move your hand around and as you get closer to the bad part... you should be able to feel the pop in your hand get stronger....

I use a stethoscope to narrow down noises like that. Works real well when diagnosing pulley/ tensioner noises. Harbor freight has a cheap one- and you'll scare the customers. :-laf

Well I ended up having to replace my steering box and my track bar was a little loose, about a turn and a half. The steering has never been tighter and no more popping. Thanks for the help!
