I was just cruising around the 12v forum and came across a thread about "Flaming River" steering shafts. A lot fo guys were bashing Borgeson and said Flaming River was much better.
I installed a Borgeson shaft on mine last winter and it is great. Top notch quality and a great fix for the junk factory coupler. I don't see how you could go wrong with the Borgeson shaft. I have used Flaming River shafts on Jeeps. I don't think there's much difference really.
I heard the Flaming River shaft is better also, it has a grease fitting on it, which the Borgeson does not have. I have the Borgeson on my truck for the last three or four weeks now, and I am fairly happy, not as tight as I thought it would be though. I also heard that the Borgeson will rust, and the Flaming River won't , only time will tell. The only reason I went with the Borgeson is, I ordered the Flaming River, and after 3-4 weeks, it still had not shown up and the Borgeson was on the shelf.
Upon inspection of my trucks steering/suspension by an alignment shop, the only trouble found was the shaft's coupling. Hearing good things about the Borgeson. I placed an order for one this week. In stock so it was. I'll let you know how the swap turns out. Never heard of Flaming River. Don't see an ad for one in the magazine.
Guys, if you'r contemplating the installation of a Borgeson you ot to try it. Twas easy as pie. Even the seal R&R was a snap. Drives different for sure! Real responsive.
Tips;sprayed everything down with PB penetrant,a new 1/8" drill bit cut right into the oil seal, two sheet steel screws pulled it right out, took 1/2 quart ps oil to top it back off.
I installed the coupling too far onto the stub shaft and encountered difficulty getting a wrench onto the set screw lock nut. I'd keep it 1/8" back from the seal bore next time
Have had the Borgeson on mine for almost 2 years. No problems, easy installation. Would recommend it to anyone. Can't comment on the Flaming River shaft, don't have any experience with it.
