Steering Slop - Truck in Hurt Locker

Brad,

It could be your alignment (just like mine have slop and pull to the right). I just need to locate a new 1degree off set ball joint and my alignment shop said it will take away the slop and pull. see story below.

Brad, The only two things I ever tried that helped was the steering box preload and the overcenter. There is a TSB on this adjustment from 98 or 99. Look on Fritz's homepage. The preload is accomplished by removing the locknut on the steering box where the steering shaft goes in, snugging down the adjusting band, backing off a few millimeters and reinstalling the locknut. That may take out a lot of your slop.

have you taken it to the dealer and complaind about excessive play in the steering?? I took mine in 7 times for steering wander, inprecise steering etc. . the 8th time I pulled up and said I had excessive play in the steeting wheel. The service writer put that on the wo and said they would order a new gear box that day without even haveing a mechanic look at it. When I asked why they did not check the gear box before I was told I did not say the right key word so all they did was check alignment( which was always in spec ). 2days later I had a delphi box but still pulled right. The dealer would not set the alignment to a spicific # so went to a 4x4 shaop and they set it to the specs I gave them ( #'s from this site ) and has been wonderful ever since.

Hey,
I am fed up with the sloppy steering on my 2000 3500. It was terrible on my 1997 2500 and my 1981 as well. All vehicles drift all over the road. I am convinced that Dodge will not address this issue just as they have with other problems on their cars and trucks. SO, what remedies have you guys found to fix this once and for all.
