Just got my gauges in the other night, and found that I am able to fairly easily hit 1300* pre turbo. Is this normal? I can only do it in 5th gear, and I am going about 90 MPH when it finally hits 1300*, but I wouldn't think you would be able to get that high with a basically stock motor.

Truck specs:

'98 12v, 5spd, 3. 56 gears

Rip rook 4" exhaust

AFE Mega Cannon

(No fuel mods til this weekend... )

Thanks,

Matt

Pyro

How long have you had the truck and are you shure that there has been no mods to the fueling, and what does the pyro read at idle, and cruisning on flat land at about 65mhp.

Smokin-

I'm positive that there have not been any fueling mods-I know the previous owners well...

250-300* at idle

approx 600-700 at 65mph (I think)

I have had the truck for a couple months

Thanks

Empty, I have never seen over 1000* (pre) with the stock exhaust and BHAF. I do have an auto so that could make a difference also.

When my 5 speed was bone stock it would hit 1300, but no more. Took towing a 20k load up a 7% grade to do it. Never went over 1000 pulling the empty 1800 lb trailer up the same hill.

What temp do you consider as the upper limit to be safe? Mine is a stock engine, no mods, other than the ATS 3piece manifold but will be pulling a 8800lb 5er up some grades this summer. It's an auto as well.

It's the altitude. Dyno guys, what's the correction for 9000 ft altitude?

You're seeing 1300 pre turbo because of running lean with the opened exhaust, better air flow intake, and high altitude.

Bet your truck run at sea level would not go over 1000-1100 wide open in 5th with stock boost.

You're seeing 24 psi of boost (or there abouts) right?

My stock 96 5 spd with Banks 3 1/2 catback, cat repalced with a 3 1/2 pipe and stock down pipe and K & N air filter in the stock box will never see more than 1050 even with the heat and humidity in Houston but we're at 50 ft above sea level.

redram-

That's what I wanted to hear. Thanks!

I get 24 psi max right now.

Any other opinions out there?

illflem, my truck was empty when I hit 1300, and it's a relatively light truck (standard cab 2500). The altitude deal sounds valid though... geez, what's gonna happen w/ the #11 and 4000GSK that are going in this weekend? EGT's climb fast above 3000rpm I imagine.

Thanks for your help guys,

Matt

Just my observations.

I agree on the stock EGTs. I could get to 1250 on a hard pull in upper gears at 2500 ft.

With your #11 and GSK, keep the plate in the stock location or near centered. At our flat altitude here in ND, with a #11 pre GSK with a BHAF and 4" exhaust I could get away with 2/3rds forward on the plate and still keep EGTS below 1400. Even then they would only touch 1400 for just a second or two prior to defueling.

If you have controlable EGTS with the plate centered you can always slide it forward a little at a time.

Now add the GSK and things keep get hotter.

The good news is use the GSK in lower gears when you never need much fuel anyway. In the upper gears shift or pull at 1900 - 2600 and you will not have a problem. You will like the #11. Good plate with noticable power and very good smoke and EGT control.

ALso... . high EGTs running empty and hotrodding do not mean higher temps pulling. I found just the oppisite. Under a good pull you never need the higher RPMS nor do you cruise at 2600 or higher in 5th (at least I don't). EGTs are no problem at these RPMS!

My truck is stock and the EGT will sometime jump over 1200 deg in the higher gears at high rpm up a hill and it makes about 23. 5 lbs of boost.

Thanks for the information, I never knew what the upper limit of "normal" is, so it gives me a point to watch for. I need to get a EGT guage so I know where I'm running, but it seems like there are so many "necessities" for these trucks. I just finished installing an ATS manifold and PacBrake, so need to save a few more pennies for awhile, then get the guage.
