I just replaced my muffler with the pipe from Geno's. I was always curious what the resonator and the cat looks like. do they come with both a cat and resonator or not? In front of the muffler is an elongated can with tapered ends like bell shaped I am assuming this is the resonator? Does anyone have pics of these? I forgot to look inside it to see what it looked like inside before I put the pipe on. I don't think older diesel pickups in our area have cats but I could be wrong.

thats the cat. no resinators. i think they started putting cats on in 04. 5. then with the 6. 7, all the other junk on there to keep clean.

How much does the cat restrict flow as compared to the muffler and do they have any chance of plugging? With the muffler off it is not all that much louder, in cab noise is barely noticable over having a muffler. The cat must do a good job of muffling itself.

I wish I wasn't in such a hurry to get it together. I forgot to look up the pipe at its insides. I would have gutted the converter while I was there.

Restricts less than the muffler.

Gutted converters are usually very noisy, as the walls are thinner than the rest of the pipe.

Hey Bill, I would also be interested in knowing if they will plug. Although I was told at our meet in Norhtwood last year that what we had on the 99 was a resonator. Now I am confused!

I understand that they get pretty loud without the cat. The best way to deal with it, if you gut it, is to run a pipe through it too, otherwise the open chamber doesn't help sound or efficient flow. If there are no emissions checks where you are you could just remove it and straight pipe that too.

The only one I had with a resonator was the megacab. The resonator was after the big muff and looks like a small muffler. The cat is the big swell with tapered ends after the downpipe from the turbo, before the muff.

I doubt you can plug the cat. My truck is over 90k miles and by the sounds of it, there isn't resriction there:-laf

Thanks for the replys guys. I will not worry about the cat then. I have ran many vehicles with a cat and no muffler and have had no issues and I like the way the cat with no Muffler sounds throaty but not too loud. Mine has no droan at all. Not hardly any louder without the muffler. I got more noise with the cool hose and PSM intake.

From my understanding, the 2nd gen 12-valve CTDs have a cat, the 2nd gen 24-valve have a resonator (more/less changes the pipe from 3" to 4" as it really has nothing in it)... I know my 99 had a resonator. The 03 and 04 3rd gens were catless, the 04. 5 to 07s have a cat, the megas have a cat and resonator, and the 6. 7L just has too much garbage.

IMO, I would not destroy the cat... for two reasons: one you can keep it and reuse it if needed, and if you don't want it the scrap dealers will pay upwards of $100 for the cat from our truck. The neighbor about drools every time he sees the cat from my truck in my shed... he's a scrap man!

The Price of precious and regular metals are making everyone drool. Not sure what the catalyst in a diesel converter is made from but the Platinum in the gas converters is in high demand. High Scrap prices have really cleaned up some of the eye sores around the country. :)

And we've lost a lot of our sources for classic and antique autos in the process... there is no care taken to preserve our heritage.

That is true. We had a few big Canadian car crusher co's come through the country about 10 years ago and that put a hurt on a lot of old cars. There are a lot of people holding onto some that should be scrapped also. The Demo derby guys also use up a lot of old ones. I was More so talking about the Misc. scrap heaps that lots of farms have/had.

I am in the hunt for an old 40-50's vehicle to build a 4X4 ratrod for the wife. She fell in love with one we saw last summer and has been hounding me to build her one now.

I beg your parden please excuse my my ignorance

I removed my resonator many miles back,(I prefer it that way) have i violated some law according to mother DMV,Al Gore or some othe law, rule? Thank you very much in advance. 6naline01 Oo.

My 04 only had a muffler from the factory. In 2004. 5 with the introduction of the 600 engine they added the cat.

Except California models had them prior to 04. 5... . and AFIK if the vehicle has one from the factory its illegal to remove it, I have heard the fine in Washington is something like 25K... .

Also its not a resonator, its a catalytic converter.

BILLVO-

On the mega-cabs you will find that they come with a CAT, muffler, and resonator. I decided to remove the cat based upon high EGT's. The service manager at Dodge told me the CAT was designed to get extremely hot in order to help with "sut" control. Based upon high-heat and flow restriction I replaced with a test pipe and then removed my muffler and replaced it with a Walker muffler sold at NAPA for $89. Note: I left the resonator alone. Also note: The CAT was not installed correctly from the factory which caused it to "fall off". Again the test pipe is for testing only. ;-) Good luck... ...

Southbound,

How about some feedback after your cat "fell off", I'm thinking that mine is about to suffer the same fate.

EGT's and drone are my my main concerns.

Thanks!

After having driven mine for a couple months without the muffler I am correcting myself about the drone of the Muffler elim pipe from genos. If I keep the rpms under 2000 its ok but over 2k rpms it gets real loud inside the cab.

A Dodge tech here has stated that the cat is responsible for only a 2-4 rwhp on the dyno. I elected to replace my stock muffler with a Shuttleworth direct replacement and retain the cat. The warranty is too valuable for 4 rwhp gain.

Cat converters contain platinum, palladium, rhodium and cerium. It just sounds expensive! No wonder thieves are having a field day in some parking lots with a sawz-all and spare batteries!
