A buddy of mine was trying to get a lift pump from the dealer with a discount from auto shop buddy of his and the dealer told him he has a pump in the tank as well as the lift pump. Is this true for a 98. 5 24v? My buddy is kind freaking out by this so I need to find out about this, because we found the pump to be putting out zero psi and it intermittently turning on when we bump the starter, so know he think he may have to changr two pumps.

Not to mention the price with the discount is $256 which at that time my buddy told the parts guy he can get it direct from Cummins for approx. $150. Then the parts guys told him he knew he could go direct but that it was Cummins that marks up the pump to DC. I can't see Cummins marking it up that much to DC. Sounds to me like this parts guy does no know what he was talking about. Anyone that know the Cummins-DC relationship know if Cummins does markup the pumps to DC?

Just really need the answer to the first question the second I'm just curious about.

There is no pump in the tank just the kift pump on the side of the block. Go to cummins and get the pump DC is over priced they are the one jacking up the price not cummins.

That is what I figured...

Aw crap... Just got this email from my buddy...

Hey I talked to Roger at Cummins. He said that there is a fuel pump in the tank that is part of the sending unit assembly. He can't help with that

because that is Chrysler not Cummins. He said that the fuel pump in the

tank most likely is not the problem. Almost always the lift pump. But we

do have 3 pumps. FYI.

Now we got info from a local Cummins guy... This doesn't add up right... . I'll have to find out who this "Roger at Cummins" is and what he actually know...

I just recently, 2 weeks ago, installed a new lift pump in my 01. 5. I bought it from Hoesil Diesel in Evansville Ind. They were great. The pump was $129. I had it shipped overnight to northern NH and that cost an extra $30, but it was here the next am and it took about 40 mins to install. Thier number is 1-800-487-1001.

bsmalley... I changed my pump out last week and I too bought it from Hoesli. Yes they were great to deal with which is why I recommended them to my buddy. I found out the "Roger from Cummins" who also told my buddy about the pump in the tank was the guy who took the order at Hoesli.

Ya know how if you are convinced of something then someone comes along a put a bug in your brain that makes you second-guess the original thought. . that is where I'm at with my buddy and I want to give him an exact answer to dispel the "mystery pump" theory... .

Thanx,

Johnny

Roger needs to take a tank module out and see for himself :-laf A service manual is a good place to start if you want to "show" your friend. Also have him unplug the electrical connector to the tank module. You will see four wires on the truck end and two on the tank end. The two being used are for the sender. The two unused are for the pump in the gasser. Follow the wiring to the connector under the cab mount in the drivers wheel well. Locate the power wire for the pump in the harness going to the back of the truck. It is missing from the other side unless you drive a gasser ;)

I left my manuals for him yesterday and told him to check it out. Altho they are for an '01, the "check the wire" is a good point and will have do that.

He does believe me for the most part but the shadow of doubt exists, even for me, becasue I am no expert especially since his is a '98. 5.

So thanx to your helpp we can both be positive...

Thanx Guys!!!!

tank pump

According to the diesel tech at a local dealer here, he claims the 2006's will have the pump in the tank. Hope they are more reliable than the ones on the side of the engine, I would hate pulling the tank to replace a p. o. s stock lift pump,,, well I would only do it once anyway... :):)

no tank pump

Hey Guys,

There is no pump in the tank. Roger is just a confused old man. Ha Ha Ha. He is a Cummins ENGINE man. He had heard other guys say before that their dealer told them there was a pump in the tank. So truth be known, he really did not know. He thought there might be one in there. Now he knows. Just wanted to set the story straight. Thanks guys.

ok, so the gen 3s have the pump in the tank... . what are the odds that the pump from a gen three would fit in the gen 2 tanks? I would be pretty surprised if dodge changed the fitting on top of the tank from year to year, the same connections and fuel pumps on the tanks have been damn nead identical from even the early 90's Also, why wouldnt a gas trucks fuel pump not work on the diesels? if the 3rd and 4th wire are on the harness, what are the chances they are alive, and if not could they be hooked up to the lift pump wire through a relay?

Erric... . thanx for the info... At least Roger has an excuse, should have never heard this from the dealer in the first place. Still had a good experience ordering from you guys and would do it again!!!

Thanx,

Johnny

Alpha, you bring up some good points... I would suppose eventually someone will look into this as a possibility.
