Truck update: nearly back to 'normal'
Well, we are slowly coming back to 'pre-stolen' status. The driver's bed side and door were painted by the repair shop as well as a new ignition assembly, fascia, and driver's exterior door handle. Since the Pioneer stereo was stolen I decided to use the insurance money to get a lesser-know brand (
Soundstream VR-931NB) DVD player with rear-view camera input and Blu Tooth. I did a bit of research about the Soundstream and they seem to have a generally good reputation (on Amazon and other forums) despite not being available at your local Best Buy or Target store. Knock on wood but I've had good luck with it for 3 months so far. It has a massive 9" removable and pivoting touch screen. I now think it is almost too big as the manual transmission shift lever almost touches the bottom of the screen. I should have ordered the 7". I put a switch on the dashboard to operate the reverse camera rather than running it to the reverse lights so I can control the camera being on even when going down the road normally or at any time. The camera itself was only $14 on Amazon.com.
I've added a hidden fuel cut-off switch and Viper Responder 3305V (350 with 2-way paging system) alarm with 520T battery backup and 508D dual zone motion sensor (movement radar) (January 2013). Will I absolutely never have the truck stolen again? No... but at least not by crackheads like the ones who stole it this time. (BTW, the 35 year old white male is now serving 20-36 months and the 35 year old white female is being sentenced in June sometime). The alarm has a 2-way remote which is nice - the remote talks to you confirming locking, unlocking, and tampering with the truck. The range is OK, but of course depends on what type of building you are in - block walls do a good job of blocking the signals.
While I had the truck out of commission with the electronic repairs, I lifted off the bed and did the fuel sending unit repair and plumbed in some fuel lines and wiring for my 50 gallon auxiliary fuel cell install. I received this for free from my awesome buddy who had it made for his off-shore boat but then decided to go with a gas engine in the boat. I don't have the aux tank completely done yet as I need to find a fuel filler assembly / housing and neck. I'm thinking of getting something off of a Jeep Wrangler TJ and later adding a locking door to the exterior of the fuel filler assembly.
In early May I finally found a topper / camper shell in Wisconsin, 3 hours from here that would fit my truck. It is bright red and I'll put Herculiner on it like I did on my previous shell.
I have more photos on the web in my signature below.
Here are a few direct links to some of the images. They are too big to embed in the body of this post. Sorry that they are grainy - the iPad didn't do well in the low light. I'll take some better shots once I get the topper / canopy / camper shell Herculiner coating done.
