I have noticed that I am getting an excessive amount of exhaust smell mostly at idle. What could be causing this?

What controls idle mixture?

Thanks

Chuck

There isn't really any mixture adjustment. At idle a certain amount of fuel is sprayed into the air that has been compressed in the cylinder. (they mix there) The fuel is probably more constant than the air because of air density or temperature.

When you say idle smell, do you mean in the cab? Or is it at the tailpipe? Does it smoke? What color? When engine is hot or cold or doesn't matter?

It might be winter fuel you're smelling. I quit using it and now only use #2 with additive. The #1 in the mix stinks and gives me a sore throat.

Diesel exhaust just stinks.

Sounds like you might either have an exhaust leak, or a non standard tailpipe.

I tried mine straight out the back but the fumes seemed to find their way into the cab. I now exit out the side (too cheap to buy a tailpipe:D ) and all is well again.

You should check your clamps on the turbo, pipes, and muffler. Look for blown exhaust gasket or cracked manifold.

I too have noticed the smell now that winter has set in. Does winter fuel really smell that much worse? They say that cab-fresh air filter from Geno's really helps. For only $40 I think I might try it.

Illflem,

Where do you find #2 in the winter in your area? I called one of the big suppliers here in my area the other day and he said winter mix is made at the refinery and sent up the pipline to the terminal. The supplier has no control. Thus, everyone sells winter blend because that is all that is supplied. He knew of no place around here that sells summer blend during the winter.

TIA,

-Jay

it probably has more to do with the cooler air temps outside. your truck cant keep the cylinder temps up at idle and now with the cooler air coming in you are not burning it all. not to mention you have slid your plate forward. if you also messed with your AFC and preboost screw that would play right into the scenario.

you should see my truck at cold startup. it smokes more than some do under a load. but that's the price i pay for the injectors i have.

Jay, most of the Conoco stations in Montana have four hoses at the diesel pump, red #2, #1, #2 and blend. The percentage blend is usually posted with the gel point and changes with the time of winter. Cenex also has #2 year round.
