Competition 2003 Pull Season-Thanks to all

Nick, You've been plenty helpful. I'm sure we'll be talking a lot more about pulling this season.

thanks.

Now anybody else want to give it a try? How about an engineer type to tackle the hitch height theory vs. practice. ;)

hitch height - the higher the better, (I think there is a point of too high, as it will will have enough leverage to take weight off of your front end. )

tires - the taller the more wheel speed you get, the faster you pull the sled the farther it will slide after the weight drops. (also, the more sidewall flex you have, possible bounce)

egt's - normally buried 1600 degrees at 75' mark. on a 400' + track that gets very hot at the end(400 feet? Where do you pull? California?)

traction / ladder bars - are imprtant for the longevity of the rear end(yep)

most likely thing to break, rear pinion / axels, or u joints(SPIDER GEARS)

:D

Sled Puller, Wade has a pull about 3 miles from his house that has a 400' full pull mark. i pulled 421'. truck got a little bit HOT.

Here's what I can tell ya NOT every one can pull with 26 inch hitch height it depends on the power you have, the traction you have, before the sled loads the rear of the truck and unloads the front. I believe it depends on the static height of the truck to start with, I have tryed twice to run a tall hitch and doesn;t work for ME so I am down to 19. 5 and it seams to do the trick I just need a little more hp to get out in 4th low and spin the tires. I don't have years of experience only 7 hooks this year but have had trouble gettting the truck set up just right and I think I am heading in the right direction now.

Craig

That's what this thread is about Craig-- get us newbies off to a better start. Nobody here wants to see a Dodge lose to a ford!:D

Thanks for checking in Gene! Taking a break from the RT thread?:D

Rookie mistakes?

Besides not confiscating all the videos of your embarrassing hooks.

Come on folks, give us something to think about. It's almost winter. :p

Don't repeatidly

Try the wrong gear just to find out if you can do it "this" time. (me) Don't tap the brakes if you are trying to stop before the "line" (85ft mark) the truck stops a lot quicker than the sled does and equals the feeling of being rear ended by a semi. (me)Always take spare parts they will never be the right ones but at least you will be able to trade them for something... lol (not me yet)

Craig

After reviewing Craigs ... "bump and stop" it looked like the sled only gave you a love tap, pushed you forward a bit. The real STOPPER was when the chain tightened back up!!

Man I love video!!LOL

Maybe we should chip in and buy Craig a Hans device. :D

Speaking of VIDEO I am in the worst withdrawl I have seen in some time. Do you need my address again? or maybe a computer literate to help get that vid uploaded to the net? I have down loaded most of the clips off D-C just to hold me over till I see the Jesup pull. How many months is it till the next pull

Slick Michelin's

you guys may wine about those tires but they treated me right on day at a pull. the pull was held in a co-op parking lot so it was loose gravel. i being an idiot could only make weight in the 6800 lbs open mod class. which means supercharged V-8's ladder bars all the way around and so on. anywhoo as the story goes i was last to pull. so i waddle my way to the sled and a stroker that just got done pulling gave me the finger. i alughed at him because he only pulled 104' pretty sad. once i got hooked my buddy who's tractor i had hauled down to the pull told me to try 2nd gear in 4 low so i did. by doing this i didn't break traction in the first 75' and hammered down oncec i saw the 100' mark go by. ended up going 240' on my slick michelin's with under 1/4 tread, and took 3rd in that class with a bone stock truck. figure that one out guys.

With a pulling back round it always helps when you read the track. this track was slightly sloped to the left and was soft down there at about 200' i chose to stay to the right side where the track was un touched other than by my buddy who took first.

lesson of the story you dont need HP's you need traction and knoledge.

auto sledding

I'm going to be sled pulling with 350-400HP. The transmission is a Sun Coast Pro-Loc.

Should I hit lock in low and shift to second locked OR wait until I hit second and then lock it?

I bought it from Nick. He pulled it about nine times and I think he always locked it in low--with close to 500hp. I'm thinking that it might last longer if I don't lock it until second.
