Recently on a trip to Eastern Oregon, all of a sudden my EGT shot up and my power shot down as I was descending the West side of "Dead Mans Pass. " East of Pendleton, OR.

I thought maybe the lift pump or my VA Box was giving me problems. I could only get up to about 25 mph and the EGT was nearly pegging at times on the hills.

I stopped and called BD to find a nearby dealer and they steered me to Milton Freewater about 40 miles up the road. I limped into Milton Freewater and found the BD dealer. He said he had no way of checking the VA Box other than to remove it and see if it made a difference. This he did with no difference. He then looked at the exhaust brake and said it was on!

He tried several time and with different tools to get it to open with out success. He then removed the brake and discovered the bushings on the butterfly valve had broken up stickinbg the brake closed. The brake was removed and the VA Box replaced and I was on my way again.

With this long post I have now come to the question uppermost in my mind: Did I damage my engine by running the high EGT's? If so how will this damage manifest itself? Is engine damage caused by an exhaust brake covered by the EB manufacturers ?

I was hauling my 4,500 lb camper at the time.

Dew, the brake on my 93 stuck on once heading north into Bellevue on 405, I was towing the snowmobile trailer. I keep hitting the on off switch and it finally went back off. I used a floor type headlight switch to control it, which works really good with an auto transmission.

Anyway hope you did not hurt your CTD. SNOKING

Could have swarn I saw a post like this afew weeks ago same thing found . Seems like the brake would make plenty of noise to indercate it was in the retard position, . When my pac-brake is on I can hear the noise above normal that is why its hard not to be aware of the position of the butterfly valve . Pac-brake recomends use daily to keep in shape , I guess BD ditto on that. LOL Ron in Louisville Ky   :D

I have always used the BD Brake when I drive the truck. Turn it on to speed up the warm up time. I don't drive the truck every day though. Hate to make short trips in it where I don't get a chance to make it work.
