Every once in a while I can not get it out of reverse:confused: to get it out I have to munipulate the clutch and only with the engine running will it come out. I back into every place I park, so it tends to get real annoying. It shifts fine other wise. It does not matter if it is on a hill up or down or level.

I am thinking something in the shift housing, since the syncro is also the one for 5th, right?

Thanks for the help

Finally! Somebody with the same problem! I'm no manual transmission expert, but my Dad's '97 does the same thing. It sticks in Reverse and 5th. Worse in 5th but hangs in reverse as well. 5th was so bad at one point that the truck actually had to be rolling to get it out. So if you coasted up to a stop sign and left it in 5th and got below 15 mph, you would have to slip the clutch in 5th gear to get the truck rolling while pulling on the lever to get it out.

Very hard on the clutch, but NO amount of yanking or double clutching could get it out.

I changed the oil and found some very black, very thick transmission oil. I replaced it with Redline MT90 and it has definately gotten better. Now a simple double clutch with the truck idling will get it out of gear. But the damage is done, and I too would like to know where to look if I ever take it apart. I will most likely replace it with a 6 speed, but I'd like to fix the 5 speed.

The fliud is fairly new:confused:

I just put a new clutch in it yesterday and in the process I lost some of the fluid and it was still cleanOo.

Oh well, back to square 1:mad: :{

Not an expert

Not an expert but ive had my transmission completely apart and cured the loss of 5 th gear problem. Before D/c & std.

Question, Neather post state there current miles on these transmission's Why???

And i don't sell-work for -any lube mfg's I just know what has worked in my rig 1000's of miles (check bio)

The respondent that stated he drained the black goo from the transmission in that case i would redrain, put in 2 qts of his choice of lube and 2 qrts (cleaner) ATF drive it unloaded ,not nailing it ,say like grandma ,say 100 miles or more-then redrain..... If when he just changed the first time tells me he may be 1 not the first owner,2 not used the right type of lube,or 3 never changed lube at all. Varnish may have built up and causing binding(tip --got better after change)

Atf is 10 wt lube and has additives to cut varnish. say you drive unloaded 20 miles to work ,Id drive like grannie say 5 days then redrain ,this allows warm up ,cut varnish ,again & again like tearing down and cleaning all parts with out the labor. Remember No RAMming.

The idler for rev and 5 th is on the bottom left of the case -where all crud goes when at rest. ?? The detent spring is in the top sidecould be varnish there?? with out tear down it is just a guess?? After one turn around should give you a clue. .

Dont roll your nose up the most poplar V8 283 chevy had a oil use proplem and lifter noise( Sticky lifters) one cause also luging IH V8's --cure a qt of dextron or just plain ATF flush and good to go again.

The fact you can slip clutch it to release tells me in most likely is not a bur on the idler shaft, varnish build up.

Sounds like the very same thing I had last Oct. Changed the transmission fluid and it got better. But not for long. Ended up putting in a South Bend Con O and found out that my Pilot bushing was shot and the imput shaft wobbled out the flywheel. Put in the kivlar bushing and it fixed the problem. It has 10k on the clutch and still working like a new transmission.

bushing

I forgot about that possibality

your were lucky . when mine went to lock 'ed in gear there was no warning except on i missed once a few k back when it stuck in 5th and i poped it out early in life- then the next time it was happened in 5th again as i was entering a Pa toll booth!!!!!!

Would not disengage!!!And was forced over a lane by a big rig being forced over by a stupid 4 wheeler because his lane was closed. And those concrete barriers in front of that booth did cause some split seconds of concern & responce.

Sorry the other guy that posted check it out NOW !!!

This area could hurt someone and should BE a Re-call.

And not with a new shaft and same bearing. .

Get the bushing from S. B. clutch. I tell every owner i run across about it and carry acouple with me for show if they want it is sell it and pick another (drive with 5 mi of SBC every wk).

I do have the spec's for the hole enlargement with a M order i can fed-x gnd on to you also.

This is not about $$ it safety. yours & the other guy's Cost same as there's less shipping.

Are you talking about the input shaft bushing in the flywheel?

If so I have a SBC Con "O" with the Kevlar bushing already installed, and I had the problem before the install so that is not it, I hope.

sticking Rev

Yes i was talking about the" needle bearing set up"

But this can happen in any gear at anysingle application of clutch system(gear change) or attemp.

However---------This dos't apply in your situtation. . Breath easy now. .

What happenes with the OEM installed needle bearing rust dust from the area collects & dries out the grease in the said bearing then wears on the needles which then tend to bind between the flywheel poilt bore and the input shaft and then the tin like wire cage breaks up and wedges together and even with the clutch disengaged(many slave cyl kits have been replaced that didnt cure the Proplem) NO release... input is stuck to the flywheel. .

The first time mine stuck i thought i didnt get the depress'ed fully because the next stroke every thing was fine. a day later & 500mi it happened again. That time i was at a stop lite and i had to clutch a couple times ,a few hrs, complete lock up!!!!

I Did drive another 200 mi,deliver & return home 700 mi to repair.

My kevlar is still inplace 500 k and not a hit of trouble.

I'ts my understanding this bushing is to be installed by Lipe at the OEM production. I did tell of the item i was using & where i got it to NV--and "my guess" they passed it to Lipe . I do know NV was looking for a different alternative. And under stand the clutch & flywheel & input bearing is supplied by Lipe... .

If the other owners and yours only sticks in R /or 5th myguess of the cuff is fork or rail/detent area---have heard of a coulpe spring failures in cl/synco pac's which in "Theory" can cause a hangup?? Not allowing it to move from one possison-another??

Inturn poping the lever out will bend a fork... .....

One thing, if you want to fix, your going have to pull it for inspection.

If your going there Call SBC get the kevlar fix that area while its out. It may be more $$ now BUT $$ in labor saved in the future.

Then there is also the simple fix for 5 th. And for your added piece mine replace the Input seal $2 and a max 1/2 hr.

It may not be needed now --it is called Preventive Maintance. We have all heard pay me now or later. . Once is enough in my driveway.

If somebody is haveing trouble geting out of fifth, because of a pilot bearing, here is how it can be done without hurting a shift fork. When coasting to the stop apply a little pressure to the shift lever towards neutral ignoring the clutch and foot off the fuel petal. When the torque equalizes between the engine and drive train as your slowing down, the transmission will slip into neutral. As I have arthritis in my knees I do this in my big truck and Dodge. Saves lockup in knees and fifth both!

Rite on

Correct,Thats how i got from Pa to Va under load-then back to northern In. empty with out the use of a clutch... ... Except when comming to a stop -to get going again you have to shut down ,under go to first ,hit the key and you off again BUT you do have to pay attention going up & down the gears not to do Damage to the synco's. And NOT stopping stoppong on an incline ,Under load re-starting will not happen. here you have to have timming. .

Side note my starter is still the one that came with the rig and never touched, one of these days im going to install new brushes and bushing just Because,Hard part is finding the spare time
