Not an expert but ive had my transmission completely apart and cured the loss of 5 th gear problem. Before D/c & std.
Question, Neather post state there current miles on these transmission's Why???
And i don't sell-work for -any lube mfg's I just know what has worked in my rig 1000's of miles (check bio)
The respondent that stated he drained the black goo from the transmission in that case i would redrain, put in 2 qts of his choice of lube and 2 qrts (cleaner) ATF drive it unloaded ,not nailing it ,say like grandma ,say 100 miles or more-then redrain..... If when he just changed the first time tells me he may be 1 not the first owner,2 not used the right type of lube,or 3 never changed lube at all. Varnish may have built up and causing binding(tip --got better after change)
Atf is 10 wt lube and has additives to cut varnish. say you drive unloaded 20 miles to work ,Id drive like grannie say 5 days then redrain ,this allows warm up ,cut varnish ,again & again like tearing down and cleaning all parts with out the labor. Remember No RAMming.
The idler for rev and 5 th is on the bottom left of the case -where all crud goes when at rest. ?? The detent spring is in the top sidecould be varnish there?? with out tear down it is just a guess?? After one turn around should give you a clue. .
Dont roll your nose up the most poplar V8 283 chevy had a oil use proplem and lifter noise( Sticky lifters) one cause also luging IH V8's --cure a qt of dextron or just plain ATF flush and good to go again.
The fact you can slip clutch it to release tells me in most likely is not a bur on the idler shaft, varnish build up.
